■P 4 * jH 1 Hyvania Captures Amagansett Hurdle Proves Repeater in Aqueduct Stake; Mandingo Clean-Cut Victor in Airflame Purse By EVAN SHIPMAN AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 19.— Hyvania. well bred but a disappointment on the flat, made some amends today for previous failures when he scored his second successive victory in the Amagansett Hurdle Handicap for Mrs. George Bostwick. Leading the recent stake winner, Clive of India, over the final obstacle, Hyvania went on to win by a couple of open lengths from Mrs. E. duPont Weirs representative, while Salemaker, outfooted for most of the mile and six furlongs trip, was six lengths farther back in third place. This win, that brought Hyvanias owner ,925, was the first of the season for the gelded son of Hypnotist II. — Vagrancy. It was accomplished with comparative ease under a confident ride on the part of the French i jockey, Albert Foot. Clive of India, who I carried the battle to the winner all the way, was conceding Hyvania 12 pounds on the scale. Shortly before the horses were called to the post for the third event, a sharp shower ; broke over Aqueduct, considerable rain 1 falling during the space of a few minutes. The strip was labeled "soft" for the feature, but Hyvanias time of 3:14 was normal, and the flat horses did not seem bothered by the downpour. In the stable area, Eugene Jacobs barn was struck by lightning, five horses being felled by the bolt. Dr. Catlett, track veterinarian, rushed to the scene, but j when he arrived, all but one of Jacobs charges were on their feet again. The five , presumably suffered from shock, but were I otherwise unharmed. Salemaker First Away Salemaker was the most alert as the field j got away to a good start in the Amagansett, but his rider took the English-bred 1 gelding back after a half mile, allowing I Hyvania and Clive of India to cut out a good pace. They all fenced well enough, and j it was evident after a turn of the field that t Hyvania and Clive of India outclassed their opposition. Only five went to the post in this stake, the number of starters sadly reduced by the recent Belmont Park fire. ; Hyvania returned his backers in the crowd j . of 17,991, .40, and it should be noted that 1 he has not looked as well all season as for this stake engagement. The best flat race on the afternoons card was a six-furlong dash, the Airflame Purse, for four-year-olds and upward with allowance conditions. Mrs. H. P. Christiansens Mandingo turned out the winner, getting up in the final strides to outfinish Sagittarius and Mighty Quest, the distance e covered in 1:11 flat and the strip all the e faster for the brief shower. Mandingo, j ridden by William Boland, allowed Miss Degree, who, as usual showed a lot of early y foot, and Sagittarius to cut out all the early y pace, but in the stretch, the Princequillo 0 gelding had the most in reserve, his bid being decisive, while Miss Degree stopped g badly. Mighty Quest came on well in the e late stages, but hung in the last sixteenth. j " i I MR. and MRS. GEORGE H. PETE BOSTWICK— Trainer and owner, respectively, of Hyvania, who won the Amagansett Hurdle Handicap at Aqueduct yesterday for the second year in a row. f
