The Blue Larkspur gelding will have a running companion in G. H. Bostwick s Palaja, who carries 140 pounds. Opposing the aforementioned tandem will be the following: Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs The Mast, 157; James F. McHughs Jam, 151; L. W. Jennings Navy Gun, 149; Mill River Stables Monkey Wrench, 133, and the three-horse Rokeby Stable entry of Crooning Wind, 143, and Genancoke and American Way, each of whom will operate under 140 pounds. The six-year-old Oedipus was a four- time stakes winner last season and earned close to 5,000, which was sufficient to | earn him the top spot among the timber • toppers. His 1952 debut was delayed until last week, at which time he turned in a corking effort to finish second behind The , Mast in the Temple Gwathmey in time of 4:16% for two and one-quarter miles. While his record is an impressive one, the | fact remains that Oedipus has fared poorly over the local stakes course. He will be t : ridden by Albert Foot. Palaja seems a bit ambitiously placed. Won Temple Gwathmey Last Week As mentioned in the preceding paragraph, The Mast was the winner of the Temple Gwathmey last week in New York and picks up only four pounds tomorrow, ! as compared to a one pound increase for Oedipus. Prior to that The Mast was the , winner of the Meadow Brook Handicap, . for a season record of two wins in four . starts. He was a stakes winner at "is ! point last year in the Tom Roby, but that race was .contested over the regular jump . course with less difficult obstacles. Pat Smithwick will do the saddle work, Jam is a three-time winner this season, accounting for the International and [ Charles L. Appleton Handicaps, has al-g ready earned in excess of the 5,000 j . through his efforts. He drops two pounds from the recent Temple Gwathmey, but l he was a distance of nine lengths behind I The Mast. His rider will be Early Phelps. . Navy Gun has been a steady sort this season, finishing first, second and third in | a trio of outings. His victory came in the ; Corinthian Handicap and in his last start . he was third in the Gwathmey, beaten only two lengths. Navy Gun seems well weight-y " ed with 149 pounds and will have the saddle services of the capable Frank "Dooly" Adams. Crooning Wind, American Way and j Genancoke have won more than their r share of Delaware stakes offerings and 1 must always be accorded a chance. Crooning • Wind was unplaced in track record 1 time here in his lone start this year, but t he is especially fond of this stakes course. . It was over the same course last year that t he swept the Georgetown and Indian River r Handicaps. Genancoke won the George- - ~ e ;t k " e ,s ♦ ♦ ; town in 1947, while American Way accounted for the race the following year. Monkey Wrench, after being idle since 1950, came back to the racing wars last week and beat My Good Man and Rank in 3:48%, which is four and one-fifth seconds slower than the present track record. That assurance of present fitness, plus the comparative feather of 133 pounds, gives him an outside chance.
