J. MURPHY HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., June 15.— Eljay, who was a fair country runner here last season, found his- racing legs in „the featured Antioch Purse here this afternoon and was a galloping winner over the good runner Ruhe at the six and one-half furlong distance. Eljay, racing for the Golden Maxim Stable, made every post a winning one in his jaunt, with Don Scurlock doing the guiding. The four-year-old son of Balladier completed his distance in 1:18. Ruhe came to the final line well in advance of Sun David, who was third. Eljay went to the front soon after the start and maneuvered into a good position after having gone a short distance. He was well in the van heading for home and was not fully extended in the final drive. The Antioch and the supporting races were witnessed by a crowd of 13,052 in ideal racing weather. Makes Usual Stretch Bid Ruhe, at one point last in the six and one-half furlongs dash, made his usual stretch bid, but had to be satisfied with second money. The temperamental Hasty House Farms runner looked as though, he might take the race in mid-stretch, but then he started to act up a bit, swishing his tail like mad. J. S. Bradleys Sun David was third. Eljay wrested the lead early from Joe Graves and was on the front end the rest of the way. Ruhe was the 5-2 favorite and Sun David 3-1. As the third choice Eljay returned 0.20 and was clocked in 1:18. Don Scurlock was the winning rider. This marked Eljays second start of the season. Last year he won 4,190, while winning four times, placing four times and showing three times.
