Daily Double at River Downs Surprises Crowd Your Notions, Bay Bam Combine For Biggest Payoff Since 1951 RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, June 15. — Courageous followers of chalk were rewarded with an unexpected bonanza in the Daily Double when Ed C. Buntings Bay Bam was successful at odds-on in the second race of the afternoon by a length. Bay Bab was held at 9 to 10 in the wagering and returned .80 as the individual choice, but the gasps that followed the posting of a 15.00 pay-off in the Double were heard in far-off Louisville. This was the largest double of the current meeting and the longest-priced combination since June 14, 1951, when Leo One and Register Now paid 40.60 for a two-dollar ticket. Eleven happy players in the crowd of 4,834 combined Your Notions and Bay Bam for the 15.00 pay-off and had to sweat out a roughly-run race which saw the favorite hemmed in during most of the running. Jockey Billy Clark drove through a narrow opening in the final stages after being blocked for almost a half-mile and the Bunting mare responded very gamely to thrust herself clear. Pencil men in the crowd observed that a parlay figured only 6.70, which indicates that the Daily Double is here to stay. The fans backed Sacketts mount, Nord Flame, dwown to 3 to 5 favoritism in the first race, for maiden three-year-olds, and Nord Flame was still a non-winner at the end of the six-furlong sprint. Your Notions, a member of the mutuel field, was the winner by two and a half lengths, returning 4.60 under jockey Luis Rivera. Rivera j had Your Notions in front at all stages of the sprint, while Nord Flame was sluggish at the barrier and wound up a disappointing sixth.
