Timely Tip First Derby Horse Of Dr Birch of Shelbyville ShelbyvilleDR DR A L BIRCH a practicing veterinary of Shelbyville Ky is starting his first Derby horse in Timely Tip a bay son of The Doge a Bull Dog stallion Dr Birch a native of Worthington Minn was grad ¬ uated from lola State College in 1921 where he played football He gravitated to Shel ¬ byville because of the prominence of the dairy interests in Shelby County He be ¬ came interested in thoroughbreds and other horses as the result of playing polo in Min ¬ nesota polo having been a very popular sport in that part of the country Dr Birch used thoroughbreds exclusively for his polo mounts He entered thoroughbred racing in 1936 as an owner and his horses first raced at New Orleans in 1937 While some of his horses like Transwin and Light Zephyr were good winners winnersTimely Timely Tip is by far and away the best horse he has ever owned While he main ¬ tains eight broodmares at his 147acre farm near Shclbyville he continues to concen ¬ trate professionally on dairy cattle
