Wilson Followed Doctors Advice and Entered Racing RacingSAM SAM E WILSON JR of Corpus Christi Texas and owner of King Phalanx has had hadthree three starters in previous Kentucky Derbys Royal Mustang second in 1951 and Golden Birch nineteenth the same year and Gush ¬ ing Oil in 1952 Wilson is an oil and real estate operator who entered thoroughbred racing in 1948 with the purchase of several thoroughbreds at private treaty The fol ¬ lowing year he attended the yearling sales and among others purchased Royal Mustang Wilson is a native of Jackson Tenn His father raced a stable of trotters During World War I Wilson served over ¬ seas as a pilot and after his discharge headed for Texas where he went to work in the oil fields He was soon drilling oil wells and became a major producer He entered racing upon the advice of his doc ¬ tor to get some relaxation The doctor and friends told him the best way to get it was through ownership of thoroughbreds
