McCreary in Eighth Try in Race Aboard Pensive and Count Turf TurfThis This will be the eighth Kentucky Derby for CONN McCREARY and topping that distinctive record is the fact that this diminutive reinsman is one of the few riders in history ever to win two renewals of the classic The jockey on Sea O Erin today already has victories on Calumets Pensive in 1944 and Jack Amiels Count Turf in 1951 McCreary is extremely short but has powerful shoulders and arms and is of much help to a horse at any stage of a race He is adept at rating and many of his victories have been won with stretch drives that paid off at the wire As a mat ¬ ter of fact he has acquired a reputation of being a modern day Snapper Garrison his whirlwind late finishes becoming one of his outstanding riding characteristics A native of St Louis McCreary became a rider after writing to a local newspaper asking for ad ¬ vice on how to get started The editor ad ¬ vised him to try Kentucky which he did and he was fortunate enough to hook up with trainer Steve Judge wEo was with Woodvale at the iime and who started Conn on hie racing career
