ROBERT S LYTLE Trio Plans Strategy for Correlation Lytle Threewitt and Shoemaker All Have One Object ve veWin Win the Derby CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky April 30 Robert S Lytle owner of Cor ¬ relation a California horse lock stock and barrel has not been widely known on the turf outside of his home state until Correlation came along as a juvenile to fly east and finish second in the East View and second to Turnto in The Gar ¬ den State and as a threeyearold make a flying foray to Gulf stream Park and cap ¬ ture the Florida Derby with a great stretch run runLytle Lytle who lives in Los Angeles not Beverly Hills he says and thereby hangs a story was graduated from Stanford University near San Francisco in 1917 and joined the Marines He became an aviation fighter pilot in those early days of sky combat served overseas and won many citations including the distinguished serv ¬ ice medal Upon medalUpon the end of the first World War he settled down to business in Los Angeles the oil business He worked his way up to general manager of the vast Doheny oil empire until the breakup of that estate in 1949 after which he went into business as an independent Currently his oil interests are fairly national in scope extending through parts of Texas Illinois and Indi ¬ ana in addition to extensive holdings in California CaliforniaIn In 1938 together with Los Angelenos Dwight W Whiting and B B Robby Robinson he attended a horse sale at Hollywood Park and as he puts it The first thing I knew I found myself partners with Whiting and Robinson in a stable of horses They raced under the nomde course of the Bob White Stable This part ¬ nership continued until the Outbreak of World War II when the stable was dis ¬ solved and Lytle took several of the fillies and mares for boarding at his Nevada farm near Carson City It was thus he was al ¬ most forced into becoming a breeder breederWhen When the war was over he resumed rac ¬ ing for his own account under the nomde course of the K T Potter ranch In the meantime his close friend department store executive Wilbur May brought some mares to board at the Nevada acreage and thus he became a partner with May in certain horses Wilbur May who is at home in Europe as the United States was in ¬ strumental in helping Braydore dam of Correlation over from France FranceLast Last winter at Santa Anita May decided that he wished to concentrate upon his breeding interests mostly quarter horses and it was decided to dissolve the partner snip The two men decided that Correla ¬ tion would go to Lytle by private agree ¬ ment but all other stock owned jointly was divided up by lot The names of the horses were placed in a hat and each partner took turns in drawing a name until the horses were exhausted exhaustedThis This is of course Lytles first Derby al ¬ though he has been at other Derbys purely as a spectator spectatorLytle Lytle has lived in the same modest house in Los Angeles for more than 20 years He and his charming wife feel that the house is good luck for since they moved in j they have had nothing but success in the oil business businessCorrelation Correlation is his first really good horse although he has owned several in the high class allowanceminoi4 stake category
