Mattingly Joins Derby Circle Of Trainers With King Phalanx PhalanxROBERT ROBERT A MATTINGLY trainer of King Phalanx has never saddled a Ken ¬ tucky Derby starter until this year al ¬ though he has established a reputation through the last decade as being one of the leading trainers in the Middle West Born in St Louis in 1917 Mattingly now makes his home in Louisville At the age of 20 he entered the sport of racing as a combination trainerstable foreman and groom and he has never worked at any ¬ thing excepting the care and conditioning of thoroughbreds His first winner was Yankee Queen at Dade Park in 1940 1940Mattingly Mattingly has been training the horses of Sam E Wilson Jr of Texas since 1953 Prior to his connection with the Wil ¬ son stable he had trained for William H Veeneman chairman of the board of Churchill Downs and for L J Hollenbach of Louisville father of L J Hollenbach Jr a member of the Kentucky Racing Commission Among the horses he trained for Veeneman were Dean Cavy and Happy Carrier
