NOBLE THREEWITT Trio Plans Strategy for Correlation Lytle Threewitt and Shoemaker All Have One Object ve veWin Win the Derby By OSCAR OTIS OTISCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky April 30 Noble Threewitt one of Cal ¬ ifornias bestknown trainers will be mak ¬ ing his first Kentucky Derby venture to ¬ morrow when he saddles Correlation a Californiaownedbred andraced 3year old whose victories however unlike most coast thoroughbreds have been scored on both the Pacific and Atlantic seaboards seaboardsThreewitt Threewitt was born and grew up in Ben ton HI Dont ask me why ut Benton is a great center of thoroughbred interest says Threewitt Its the home of Harold Simmons and Clyde Trout among other good horsemen Like every other kid in town I got interested in horses at an early age at the Fair Grounds a spot then much used by horsemen to winter horses and freshen them Simmons gave me a chance to learn first working around tlie stable later galloping horses I struck o as a rider at the Illinois fairs and finally hit the big time at Riverside Park near Kan KanContinued Continued on Page FortyEight TT i iThreewitt Threewitt Trainerof Favorite Making His First Derby Venture VentureCtntinued Ctntinued from Fag ForfyTW ForfyTWsas sas City Mo But to be honest about it I wasnt much of a success in the saddle saddleI I drifted west to the Caliente racetrack in Mexico in 1932 and went to work for J B McGinn Hr realized Id never be ¬ come a good rider and encouragec me to learn the horse business from another base namely training So I quit the saddle and became his assistant He had c lot of prob ¬ lem horses including McGonigle Many oldtimers rate him the worst post rogue n the history of American racing I know that is taking in a lot but McGonigle was a lot of rogue rogueWhen When McGinn died I took over as the trainer and have been following the pro ¬ fession ever since I had some good horses 20 years ago like Coalizer and Beeson And of course I was very much in the news in SAM KraiMjIfoo whw I had St Cfiff and others tor banker George J Oiannini be ¬ cause of the way we balanced the plates Since then Ive had a lot of ups and downs Sometimes only a few horses some ¬ times many manyMy My training methods are standard The fundamentals are the same as they were when the old masters were at it at Cali ¬ ente and they boil down to learning as much about your horse as possible apply ¬ ing common sense always pay close atten ¬ tion to detail know how to read the con ¬ dition book and keep informed of scientific advances in veterinary care careWhile While most of Threewitts career as a trainer has been in California he has trained in the East on a few occasions one being only a few seasons ago when he had a draft of horses in New Yurk for Mr and Mrs John D Hertz He has been to Ken ¬ tucky as a visitor but never has raced a stable before at either Keeneland or Chur ¬ chill Downs
