W C Stephens Stephens Goyamos Trainer In Racing Since He Was 14 14WOODFORD WOODFORD C WOODY STEPHENS has had two Kentucky Derby staries pre ¬ vious to Govamo and Next Page having saddled Halt fifth in 1949 and Blue Man for the White Oak Stable third in 1952 Born in Midway Ky Stephens came into racing at 14 Upon reaching his six ¬ teenth birthday he struck out to become a jockey and on January 16 1931 rode his first winner at Hialeak ark on a horse called Di ¬ rectly owned by Fred Burton Nine years later he saddled his first winner Bronze Bugle BugleHe He joined Woodvale Farm as an assit ant to trainer Steve Judge and helped con ¬ dition Our Boots eighth in 1941 In 1944 Stephens took over the horses of Jules Fink and later trained for Frank Frankel before rejoining his present post with Woodvale as head trainer in 1948
