Boland Up on Red Hannigan Won With Middleground in 50 50WILLIE WILLIE BOLAND riding Red Hannigan is a youngster of 22 but already has regis ¬ tered a victory in the Derby That came in 1950 when as an 18yearold he be ¬ came the second apprentice in Derby his ¬ tory to triumph being aboard King Ranchs Middleground Born in Corpus Christi Texas Willie began riding his fathers quarter horses at an early age Prior to donning silks young Boland galloped horses for Max Hirsch for five years He won his first race at Belmont Park on May 13 1949 and his first stakes victory was in the Galalnt Fox Handicap on April 29 1950 a week before his Derby win Since graduating from the apprentice ranks Boland has blossomed into one of Americas better journeymen jockeys and is much in demand espeically in the New York area where he does most of his riding
