ANDREW J CREVOLIN Crevolin Molter Determine Minded Former Successful as Owner Trainer in Second Derby Try By OSCAR OTIS CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky April 30 Andrew J Crevolin owner of the Californiaraced but Kentuckybred Deter ¬ mine has skyrocketed into the public lime ¬ light within the last six months by becom ¬ ing the leading owner at Santa Anita and with a hard hitting Kentucky Derby pro ¬ spect Determine This gray horse a son of Alibhai from a Mahmoud mare earned his starting berth in Americas great three yearbid classic by winning the Santa An ¬ ita Derby in decisive fashion as well as six other stakes in a row in California dur ¬ ing the winter and spring springCrevolin Crevolin is an automobile dealer with headquarters in Alhambra California although he makes his home in nearby Covina This home while not the center of a breeding acreage is located on a 40 acre plot which has pasturage for thor ¬ oughbreds and where some of his own horses are turned out from time to time timeCrevolin Crevolin became known in racing when he was a bidder at the first Louis B Mayer dispersal At that sale turf writers scurried around to find out who this newcomer was They met a pleasant fellow who while a newcomer to the thoroughbred sport had a thorough understanding of livestock Not only was he a graduate of the University of Oregon where he judged cattle but he also had taken post graduate work in agri ¬ culture and animal husbandry at Califor ¬ nias fine college the branch of the Uni ¬ versity at Davis DavisHad Had Good Horses HorsesCrevolin Crevolin has never had a really bad year since he entered racing Before Deter ¬ mine came along he had the fast Imbros and before that a really worthwhile handi ¬ cap horse in Be Fleet The latter a son of the great Count Fleet is now at stud in Kentucky KentuckyWhile While Crevolin has bred a few horses he lias preferred to be a patron of the sales And while best known nationally as a pat ¬ ron of Keeneland sales he also has been a consistent buyer at the California Breed ¬ ers vendues on the West Coast CoastIt It has been the fashion on the west coast lately to refer to Crevolin as Lucky Andy But there is far more than luck behind his purchases and his success in racing He is willing to take a chance on a thoroughbred which strikes his eye he races his horses instead of laying them up and while he bases in California his string has raced on both the Atlantic coast and in the middle west westJoins Joins Breeders Group GroupWithin Within the last year Crevolin has be ¬ come active in affairs of the California Breeders Association has been elected to the board of directors and is a member of the sales committee which this August will stage its first auction at Del Mar in ¬ stead of in the Los Angeles area areaCrevolin Crevolin likes to entertain and last win ¬ ter had more than 250 turf folks as his guests at a cocktail and dinner party at the San Gabriel country club near Santa Anita AnitaHe He also likes to do things for people with the best known story illustrating this point being his gesture to Ed Axton of Kentucky breeder of Be Fleet When Be Fleet had won the San Juan Capistrano in 1951 Axton witnessed the race as his guest guestCrevolin Crevolin chided Axton about there being no breeders awards in Kentucky as pre ¬ vail in California and told Axton that to make up for it he would present him with an automobile The next morning a big Imperial Chrysler was at Axtons door
