Sportsmans Park Notebook Number of DerbyBound Patrons Enjoy Day of HalfMile Racing By J J MURPHY SPORTSMANS PARK Cicero 111 April 30 A number of turf minded persons en route to the Kentucky Derby stopped off here Thursday afternoon to enjoy a day of halfmile racing In one group were members of a tour from California conducted by Jack Demusey of Los Angeles In the party were W W Tinv I Naylor one of the most prominent thorough ¬ bred breeders in the Golden State Mr and Mrs George Ring who also breeds horses on a large scale Mr Ring also being recently elected head of the western division of the Horsemens Benevolent and Protective Associ ¬ ation the newlyweds Mr and Mrs Clement Hirsch he also being a California thoroughbred breeder of prom ¬ inence and who was one of the heads of the Las Vegas Jockey Club Webb Everett former racing secretary at Santa Anita and at Washington and Arlington Parks in Chi ¬ cago Leonard Cohn George Franco and Tom Lawrie Denver sportswriters Mrs Ann Peppers California breeder of thor ¬ oughbreds and owner of Merryman Ranch in that state Bob Betts advertising mana ¬ ger of Centennial Race Track as well as Cliff Padgett Sam Seelig Dan Naylor Frank Moore Mr and Mrs Frank Hobart W John Thissen and D Jack Thissen ThissenA A A A AIn In another group from Jacksonville Fla were Judge Charles Miller and Joseph Liv ¬ ingstone newspapepr publisher of the Flor ¬ ida city Also present for a day of the sport I were Russ Hodges wellknown TV and radio commentator Charlie Feeney of the Long Island Star Journal Barney Kre menko of the New York Journal American Eddie Brannick traveling secretary for the New York Giants and Tom Sheehan chief scout for the Giants GiantsA A A A AThe The management of Sportsmans Park has announced that the running of the Kentucky Derby will be brought to its patrons through the medium of giant tele ¬ vision screens placed throughout the grounds A number of such screens will be distributed in various spots throughout the grandstand and clubhouse so that there will be no necessity of crowding for van ¬ tage points Trainer Del Carroll reports that the following foals have arrived at Locust Lawn Farm which is located in Chicagos suburbs chestnut filly by Count Domino Balla Balla chestnut filly by Count Domino Gypsy Actress chestnut filly by Count Domino Bells Pride bay colt by Corona Corona Minbrome chest ¬ nut filly by Count Domino Dark Toots and a chestnut filly by Count Domino Belmar Starr StarrA A A A ASportsmans Sportsmans Park gave a 6500 purse for a fivefurlong race here Wednesday We noted that on Thursday no purse offering on any American race track exceeded 4500 Former jockey Jimmy McCoy first rider to wear goggles was an arrival from Florida with three horses and also took over the training of seven for Jimmy Emery McCoy likes to talk about his horses and his grandchildren Elmo Jor ¬ dan who for many years has been one of the most active members of the Illinois Breeders Association is visiting Jordan suffered a broken neck in a fall last autumn and was hospitalized most of the winter Fly Two Day and Enterprising owned by J J Helfrick and trained by W E Fling have been shipped to Fairmount Prrk and apprentice Jerry Fisher went along to do the riding Frank Peacock former owner got in from Grand Island Nebr and after spending a day here de ¬ parted for Fairmount Park Trainer B F Stutts is in from Florida with Thistle War Gypsy Flower and Madam Cross CrossA A A A AOwners Owners John Annabro and Sam Terese of New Orleans were among those present recently R C Adams E H McMahon and Francis Hughes got into Lincoln Fields with their horses Russell TS and Mr Zippo owned by John Stelle are here from Fairmount Park and are hi charge of trainer Phil Reuter Trainer W T Ray ¬ mond arrived with five head the property of the Chicagoowned Jacnot Stable The horses are quartered at Washington Park Trainer L J Keating was due to arrive at Washington from Florida with 14 horses owned by W T Huntley Trainer J W Doyle has 14 horses here for Mrs Russell L Reineman The latter also has 14 thor ougbreds in Kentucky The veteran train ¬ er Jim Sands who has raced in Illinois every season since 1932 has Battle King and Merry Mount at this track
