Three Derby Personages Passed On During 1953 1953Woodward Woodward Had Three Winners Schwartz One Covington on One OneCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky April 30 Three figures whose connection with the Kentucky Derby were particularly noteworthy died during 1953 The most prominent of the triumvirate was William Woodward The others were Morton L Schwartz and George W Covington CovingtonWoodward Woodward one of Americas outstanding racing personalities and a close friend of the late Col Matt J Winn had been iden ¬ tified closely to the Derby since 1924 when he made his first nominations for the race in number six He passed away at his New York City town home last September 26 In the last spring of his life the owner of famous Belair Stud nominated two colts for the 79th Derby they were Game Chance and Prince Charlie i Associated with the Derby over that 30 year span as a prominent breeder and owner Woodward saw his famous red polka dots on a white blouse silks lead desperate ¬ lycharging fields down the Churchill Downs stretch to Derby triumphs First it was Gallant Fox winner in 1930 by two lengths Then came Gallant Fox son Omaha to score a length and onehalf vic ¬ tory in 1935 Finally in 1939 it was Johns ¬ town that routed his opposition with an eightlength victory Woodward not only was prominent as a breederowner He performed great service to thoroughbred racing as chairman of The Jockey Club ClubSchwartz Schwartz who won the Derby with Bold Venture in 1936 died at his New York City home in January Bold Venture also is known as the only Kentucky Derby winner to sire two winners of the event They are Assault and Middleground winners in 1946 and 1950 respectively respectivelyCovington Covington who rode Macbeth H to vic ¬ tory in the 14th running of the Derby in 1888passed on in Baltimore at the age of 83
