DeSpirito Making His Derby Bow on Black Metal Today TodayLong Long a ranking rider in New England TONY DeSPIRITO will be making his Ken ¬ tucky Derby debut this afternoon aboard Maine Chance Farms Black Metal DeSpi ¬ rito has been a leading rider ever since his apprentice year and in 1952 established a new riding record Jf or number of winners in a calendar year 390 a mark which has since been surpassed by Willie Shoemaker Last year he ranked third on the list with 311 winners winnersDeSpirito DeSpirito entered racing under the tute lege of J H Carr beginning as a hot walker Most of his riding has been accomplished in New England and Florida although he did fly west last year to ride a few days at the illfated Las Vegas track in Nevada
