mvr ON THE WIRE By HUGH J. McGUIRE DETROIT RACE COURSE, Livonia, Mich., June 11.-A stable racing here that is attracting a great deal of attention is the mflnnfffl menage nf of Mrs. Mrs. .Trv Joe I mflnnfffl menage nf of Mrs. Mrs. .Trv Joe I Tomlinson, wife of the contractor who makes his headquarters in Toronto. Just two or three years ago the Tomlinsons, who had been confining their racing activities almost exclusively to the Canadian circuit, decided to expand and went to Lexington, jjexingwn, Ky ivy., in in mvr Lexington, jjexingwn, Ky ivy., in in search of additional racing material. An affiliation was established with James S. Jones of that capital of the thoroughbred world, and Jones, a former rider and trainer who had been conducting some breeding activities and breaking yearlings, was induced to train the Tomlinson string. The coalition has proved very successful., and reached some sort of climax a week ago when Mrs. Tom-linsons Chain Reaction won the Con-naught Cup Handicap at Woodbine Park and the Livonia Stakes here at Detroit fell to Loose Rock on the same Saturday afternoon. AAA Perhaps more important than either of these tallies was the success of Mrs. Tomlinson s Back Hoe in the Westchester Stakes at Hollywood Park just two days previous. This bargain colt with the unattractive hocks trimmed Calumets previously unbeaten Trentonian " and inspired Oscar Otis to write. "At the moment the leading candidate for juvenile honors of summer western racing is unquestionably Back Hoe." The three stakes successes in three days as far separated as Woodbine and Hollywood Parks prompted several of his fellow trainers here to ask Jones if he was trying to break up racing. The reply of Jones was to the effect that at last he had been discovered to be doing his training by telephone for both he and Tomlinson were grounded at Lexington in the latters private plane when the two eastern races were being run. On the Coast along with Back Hoe, there is a two-year-old filly named Diesel Power, a miss by Polynesian Wilt Thou, purchased from the Bonn Estate and for whom Jones has a high regard. AAA As will be seen from the foregoing the Tomlinson horses are given names with an association to the contracting, ,busjnesst Tomlinson Stable Enjoying Success Capture Three Stakes in Three Days Horses Conditioned by Former Rider There are also such as Angledozer, Motor Scraper, Motor Crane, Grey Granite, Fine Grader, Solid Rock and others. Headquarters of the racing string are here-at Detroit but sorties will be made into Canada and probably to the Cleveland area for stakes engagements. Present plans are to send Loose Rock to Woodbine Park for the Toronto Cup on June 16, while Rock Drill is scheduled to appear in the Selene, a sprint for fillies, at the same course on the l. Chain Reaction is here for his engagement Saturday in the Wolverine and the Tomlinsons are expected to be on hand to witness his performance. At Hollywood Park, Back Moes schedule calls for his appearance in the Haggin, C. S. Howard, and his main objective, the 0,000 Starlet Stakes. AAA One horseman who has raced in this area regularly for many years is George C. White, a Tennesseean who inherited his knowledge of horseflesh from his late father who was a well-known trainer and breeder. George took to the training end of the business while his brother Cy conducts a modern breeding establishment known as Elsmeade Farm at Lexington, Ky. The family farm is the Herbert Stud at Hopkinsville, Ky., and here George White stands at stud a campaigner of other years who is well known to all racegoers in this area. He is Diamond Dick, a familiar and successful figure in the handicap division when he was racing and whose sons" and .daughters are appearing on local programs here. AAA After the retirement of Diamond Dick, White raced very successfully the filly Our Request, who was owned in partnership with Dr. E. W. Thomas, Lexington veterinarian and operator of an equine hospital with a great deal of modern equipment in the Blue Grass Our Request raced in stakes throughout her career and accounted for several added-money features and holds the track record here of 1:43 for a mile and a sixteenth. Now White tells us that she has foaled a handsome colt by Eight Thirty at the Circle M Farm of Mrs. E. S. Moore in Lexington. This is her first foal and she has been brd back to Eight Thirty. White tells us also that Our Sister, a full sister to Our Request, has a yearling colt and a suckling filly by Errard and has been sent to the court of Papa Redbird. AAA White informed us of a very gratifying situation that holds in the family of Our Request. Dam of Our Request is Inspiration and the latter has two full sisters in Catherine Fox and Edith A. All three of these mares produced stakes winners. Catherine Fox had Equifox and Edith A. is the dam of Riverland. White has six mares at Herbert Stud, three of whom have foals by Diamond Dick, while the other three are maiden mares by Challedon, Vezzano and Cable and all three are to go Diamond Dick. AAA Mort Turnbull and Jim Cleverley took time out from their automobile business to become railbirds. . .Those whb condemned Back Hoe for a poor race in Florida could hot have known that the colt had bucked his shins. . .Former jockey Clare Critch-field is on the mutuel staff at this course . . .After serving as auctioneer at the sale of some horses last Saturday, Bill Zakoor turned over his fees to a local church . .It was reported that several trainers deliberately skipped lunch on Saturday evening . . . Walter Coleman reported the death of the mare Brassy Lie, the property of Coleman and James Tupper of Nashville. The mare died at Tuppers Nashville farm while foaling prematurely to Vincentive. Coleman and Tupper have a yearling filly by Diamond Dick from Brassy. Lie. AAA In Brief: James P. Ross, Jr., placing judge here and recently appointed racing secretary at Atlantic City, will be no I stranger at the resort city course. Ross has served there officially on four different occasions. . .William Gateman sent Hoop Up and By Degrees from here to Woodbine Park. The horses race for Douglass Ness . . . Miss Jane Byron, who owns and trains her own horses, checked in with Blue Contest and Aethel Row. . .In addition to the horses owned by Mrs. Joe Tomlinson, trainer Jones has stock for Keller M. Little, Dr. S. Im-prescia, W. A. Nelson, Elmer Davis, H. P. Morancy and Mrs. Jones for a total of 30 head. . .A local trainer was seen compiling a list of names in the office of the racing secretary. He had just saddled a winner and the list contained the names of no less than 13 employees of the stable who were to receive "stakes." !
