, On the Trot 1 ! By MORRIE KURLANSKY I Kidwell Shows Skill With Double Seikos King Displays Late Speed Attractive Program Carded Tonight MAYWOOD PARK, Maywood, 111., June 11. Glenn Kidwell, one of the younger trainers here, was the hero Wednesday , night night when when he he guided guided night night when when he he guided guided two winners on the ten-race program. The two victorious horses were Roxburgh Carmen, a three-year-old Goose Bay filly, who annexed a C-class pace in 2:10 for a new personal record, and Roxburgh I o 1 a , f ive-y e a r - o I d mare by Tempered Arion, who dead dead heated heated in in a a B B- dead dead heated heated in in a a B : : class pace with Henry Bloomes Madan 1 Cash. Roxburgh Carmen and RoxburgI ; Iola are half-sisters, being from the Cole Cash mare, Edith Cash. While Kidwel i scored a front-going victory with the Goos Bay filly, who shows all the laziness of hei ! famous progenitor and has to be proddec and hustled all the way, his ride behinc Roxburgh Iola was a fine example ol shrewd reinsmanship in that he secured the lead for the mare, relinquished it tc Madam Cash on the backstretch, then came again in the last quarter. If Roxburgh Hero, a two-year-old pacing gelding by Poplar Abbe Widow Dixon, hadnt run a temperature early this week, Kidwell probably would have had a third winner, for the juvenile, had won his first start a few weeks ago in 2:15, while the winner of the first division of the Northern Illinois Colt Stakes for two-year-old pacers, Hollis Regurs Don B. Commander, was timed in 2:17. So far at this meeting, Kidwell has guided six winners, the same number of which he has horses in the stable owned by Edward Moody of Sullivan, 111. Glenn, 32, is also a native of Sullivan, and started training harness horses before the war. For the last three years, he has been private trainer for Moody, who has great confidence in the ability of the young man, who has successfully managed to keep the venture a remunerative one. One of the best young pacing prospects, the two-year-old Selkas King, with owner-breeder Jerry Baier in the sulky, gave a breath-taking demonstration of late speed in the second division of the Northern Illinois Colt Stakes. Rated off the pace for more than three-quarters, the son of Kings Counsel, when asked for speed on the final turn really turned it on in the last eighth and his time of 2:14 is no true indication of the colts ability. With Kings Counsel as his sire, the growthy colt already has a stamp of quality, but he also is well recommended by his dam, the good race mare, Selka Adam, 4, 2:06y2h, by Calumet Adam. Selkas King had been consigned to the Tattersall Yearling Sales last fall, but Baier reconsidered and decided to race the colt himself, which in all likelihood he wont have to regret. Hi-Los Forbes, Harness Horse of the Year in 1953, is lame and his seasonal debut has been postponed indefinitely according to word received from owner Earl Wagner of Landover Hills, Md. Wagner said the six-year-old stallion was lame in either or both of his front feet and that daily diathermy treatments have been ordered in an effort to clear up the trouble. It is a certainty ihat Hi-Los Forbes wont get to the races for at least four weeks and. it may be much longer than that. Hi-Los Forbes, who burst into national prominence by going a mile in 1:58 at Roosevelt Raceway just a year ago this week, has been treated all spring for lameness ihshis right-front foot. After a workout last Saturday, he appeared lame in the left-front foot. Wagner and his wife also have switched trainers, giving the horse to Eugene "Buck" Minnear, who has had some success in treating other horses by diathermy. Henry Clukey had been the Wagner trainer. "In the past month or so we gave Hi- Los two treatments with Minnears diathermy machine and they seemed to help," Wagner explained. "Now were going to treat him for almost an hour each day. If that doesnt cure him, then it looks as though we might have to turn him out for the year." Minnear worked the horse at Rosecroft Raceway last Saturday and he appeared sound as he went three miles, the fastest in 2 : 08. However, as soon as he left the track after the last mile, he showed lameness in the left-front foot, the one which had not bothered him previously. An attractive nine-race program will be presented Saturday, with The Harness Horse Stakes, a ,000 double-dash event for fast-class trotters, the feature race. Clever Tee, winner of over ,000 at this meeting; Francis Mc and Taylor Ridge will renew their feud for leadership in the trotting ranks and they will be joined by Volora, winner of her last three races in lower classification; Deckwin, Evening Song and Express Colby, which should assure a close contest. In a conditioned event for pacers listed in classes AAr A and BB, eight side-wheelers who have shown to advantage at this meeting will vie for a ,500 purse. In order of post positions the following horses will start in this mile dash: Laura Jane Tryax, BHaven, Miss Shine-A-Mite, Gay Order, Dominion Boy, Myrtle Truax, Easter Flowers and Fairbanks. The best three-year-old pacers on the grounds will meet in Saturdays fifth race, and it is in this event that Maestro Pick has to show that he is of Little Brown Jug caliber.
