SHOWS MARKED IMPROVEMENT 4 Coequel Carries Her Speed Over Mile at Belmont Park. Fails to Quit as Expected and Wins Ethel-bert Purse OkapIShows DulITTorni. NEW YORK, N. Y, June 31 With no spe- clal feature down for decision, the "best race at Belmont Park today was a mile condition affair, christened- the Ethelbert Purse. It brought an excellent finish when Coequel, from Dewitt Pages Maemere Stable, showing a marked improvement over her .previous effort, stuck it out gamely to score oyer D. A. Woods Indian Runner, which in turn was well before William Zeigler, Jr s Bonanza, and, the imported Statesman II. and Okapi followed these over the line. . For the opening- of the final week at Belmont Park there was a good crowd out, and the sport was excellent, though some of the winners came from unexpected quarters In the mile race that had the feature posi- tion Coequel went to the front as was expected, but while she could only carry her speed for half a mile Saturday, she was ready to kill off .all the contention in this f6 Bn,anza attempted to go with the filly, but he was put away, and then as Indian Runner charged through the stretch, she stuck it out gamely to be winner by a head. . Statesman H., which had worked exceedingly well for the Tunning, was utterly devoid of speed, while Okapi, after a flash, tired badly. He is plainly only a shadow of the good horse was he was last year. There were sixteen maiden juveniles which met in the opening four and a half furlongs dash, and it brought a surprise when Damon Runyons All Scarlet, an unsexed son of Infinite and Brown Charmer," starting, for the first time, was the winner. He won with something to spare over George Odoms Royal Vixen and Lovely Lyric and .Free Again. Mrs. Silas B. Masons Couleedam proved himself a smart sort of plater when he ran the five furlongs through the Widener course to beat the juveniles that opposed him in the second offering. Be won by six lengths over Mrs.. W; A. Bridges Maxine F. and. Prosy, from- the Manhasset Stable, was a close third, beating Playful Tour for that part of? the purse. - Hirsch Jacobs saddled his second winner of the day when lie sent out William N. Adrians Golden Way in the mile and a furlong of the third. The son of John P. Grier was much the best and, under a good ride by Wayne Wright, he won with plenty. to spare oyer Mrs. E. A. Burkes Royal Gold, with George Boehles Major General saving third from White Lightning. Simon Healy sent a fit horse to the post when he saddled Alvin Untermyers Gold Foam for the mile of the fourth, fashioned for the three-year-olds, and he was a surprise winner over Joseph E. Wideners Silversmith, while William Woodwards Gallant Prince, which has been a work companion for Omaha in much of his training, closed a considerable gap to be third over Nectarine. . . Capt., Clovis E. Duhain, for many years in charge of the Pinkerton fordes. at The Jockey Club tracks, was a visitor at Bel-; mont Park Monday morning. Captain Duhain, who hag been confined to .his home for eight months, was looking and feeling greatly improved, and expects to be back on the job in the near future.
