EPSOM DERBY WEDNESDAY " - . . World Famous Race the Big Event of Epsom Summer Meeting of Pour. Days, Beginning Today. NEWMARKET, England, June 3. The Epsom summer meeting of four days- duration, f eaturingthe worlds greatest race, the Derby, and sister event, the Oaks, gets, under way tomorrow. For days there has been a steady trek of humanity to the Downs, which will provide parking space for more than 500,000 people who come here annually. The Derby is the one racing event that captures the hearts -of sportsmen the world, over.. - Hawkers, gypsies, fortune tellers, tipsters and thimble riggers, the blind, the dumb and the lame come to this international spectacle as in the days of old. The poor come on foot or in humble horse-drawn vehicles. The costers drive down from London in their donkey carts. Many thousands come in autps. Royalty rides to Epsom Downs on a special train. But all come to snatch a" thrill from the spectacle of the cream of the thoroughbreds straining every muscle to bring the silks of their owners first past the winning post. Apart from the Derby, the next most important event is the Oaks, so often referred to as the fillies derby, as this classic stake, confined to the gentler sex, is also run over the full Derby distance of one mile and a half, with the contestants carrying the regulation weight of 126 pounds. Other important stake events carded for this meeting are the Coronation Gold Cup, at one mile and a half; the Durdans Stake Handicap, at one mile and a quarter; the Royal Stakes, at six furlongs, and the. Acorn Stakes, a, five-fur- j long test for two-year-old fillies.
