FURF1BER FINISHES THIRD Pantoufles Light Weight Big Aid in Rockingham Victory. Whitney Filly Holds Short Margin Over Boston Brook .and Jones Racer at End Large Crowd on Hand. SALEM, N. H., June 3. An allowance affair, titled the Lexington Purse, for three-and four-year-olds, headlined Mondays program here. The winner turned up in C. V. Whitneys Pantoufle, one of the light weights of the party, which was asked to carry ninety-eight pounds. Boston Brook, racing for H. R. Dickens, finished in second place, while Col. W. A. Jones Furfiber, backed into favoritism on the strength of his splendid second to Pompeys Pillar in the Decoration Day Handicap, was third. Rough Party, which displayed keen speed to set the pace in the same race last Thursday, was devoid of all her early speed in todays test and, though gaining some ground during the late stages, was never in a position to threaten the leaders. In the Lexington Purse Boston Brook and the Whitney filly went out from the start to show the way. Maiben had Furfiber in third place, while for the first half mile Rough Party raced last. It was after taking the turn from the far side of the track that the Sickle filly caught Boston Brook to take command. Maiben still had the favorite under steady restraint. Pantoufle was clear when the stretch was reached and Boston Brook was well clear ofj, Furfiber. It was not until in the stretcfir that Maiben asked the son of Carlaris for his best and he finished in a game manner, but it appeared that Maiben had delayed his move too long. Pantoufle, inside the last sixteenth, was plainly doing her best and Wall was resorting to a brisk ride to save the day by a short margin, while Furfiber had cut down the advantage of Boston Brook until only a nose separted them at the end. When too late, Rough Party started to run, but was never troublesome. Brustigert was always back in the ruck. A return to summer-like weather brought out another large gathering to witness the sport over a lightning fast track. , Silvio Goucci, an arrival this morning from Latonia, lost little time in getting into action, guiding West Star to victory in the six-furlong offering that introduced the days sport. A limit field of non-winners paraded to the post. It resulted in a stirring contest, with the ride of Coucci playing a major part in the score of the Westy Hogan colt. The stoutly supported choice, Maidwell, finished in second place, beaten only a head for the major portion of the spoils. Nervy Nella gained the show position over the fast-closing Waswanappi. Step Away, a surprise winner in her first outing here, when she won at better than 30 to 1, ran her score to two in a row today by leading home the- platers that met in the five and a half furlongs of the second.
