BE BIG WINS BY A NOSE . Earns Decision in Mondays Principal Attraction at Detroit. Triumphs Over Chance Queen After 1 Spirited and Hard Fought Finish 0. W. Hay Third. DETROIT, Mich., June 3. Two-year-olds furnished the sport for the Detroit Athletic Club Purse, and main attraction at Detroit this afternoon, when a field of eight met under allowance conditions for the third event. The dash resulted in one of the most spirited finishes of the meeting, with J.-M. Brooks Be Big getting up to beat Mrs. H. Dattners Chance Queen by a nose at the end of five furlongs. A short length separated the latter and C. W. Hay, which also wa3 only a nose before the Bomar Stables well regarded Beth Bon at the close. After the opening furlong, where Chance Queen had established a clear lead, the winner and Chance Queen raced in nip-and-tuck fashion, and it was not until the last stages that Be Big gained his success. While Beth v Bon was a strong factor from the start and had no mishaps, C. W. Hay was forced to race wide the greater part of the way and only wore the favorite down at the close. The others of the field showed little. A heavy rain Sunday night left the track muddy for the training period, but it improved rapidly afterwards and despite intermittent drizzles Was only slow for the days racing. Notwithstanding the unfavorable weather conditions, a good-sized crowd was on hand to usher in the second full week of the spring meeting. COME HOME MUCH BEST. Emmett Potts saddled another winner for the Detroit-owned Bomar Stable when Come Home, a daughter of Jean Valjean and Tesque, was much the best of Matapeake, Elanac and eight other maiden two-year-olds that sped over four and a half furlongs of the opening race. Never far back of the pacemaking, Matapeake and Elanac, Come Home took command in the stretch to be five lengths before Matapeake at the end. , Gracious Pearl, which enjoyed favoritism, raced wide throughout. Frankie Ritz rode his first winner in many weeks, and Piping Hot registered her first success since the Florida season, when she led My Peter, Neon and seven other three-year-olds to the finish of the Sault Ste Marie allowance purse that served as the second number. Mrs. Sam Orr furnished the first winning favorite of the afternoon when Aunt Flor led Don Vern, Sugar Jar and six others to the finish of the Bay City Purse that served as the fourth race. Ridden by the veteran, Johnny Mattioli, Aunt Flor took command soon after the start to make every post a winning one and reached the finish five lengths before Don Vern, which led the tiring Sugar Jar by two lengths at the finish. Glen Smith, who scored with Be Big, completed a double when Ladino furnished another popular triumph in winning the three-quarters fifth race. Second went to Royal Purchase, with Donna James third. After Donna James had raced the pacemaking Mint Bud into defeat, Ladino took command, but despite a commanding advantage, Smith kept the victor under pressure to the end. While Royal Purchase held third position from the start and the winner was forced to come from far back, Mint Bud quit badly in the drive.
