The 1936 Aurora spring meeting was thd best ever staged at the Fox Valley course. The attendance was larger than in any previous year, and the mutuel handle kept pace with the size of the crowds. The Illinois Derby made history when A. G. Tarns black gelding Rushaway, a son of Haste, bred by Joseph E. Widener, won it on Friday, May 22, was loaded on a chartered express car that night for Latonia, 300 miles away, and the next day, Saturday, May 23, won the Latonia Derby, to carve a niche in the equine hall of fame for himself for the most unique feat in the history of horse racing in this country, winning two Derbys in twenty-four hours.
