i HAWTHORNE TURF NOTES s $ Frank Miller, custodian of the jockey quarters here, reported that he has sixty-one riders listed, of which sixteen are apprentices. Sam Gorbet arrived with the stable of thoroughbreds he is training for C. E. Irvin, Irvin and Gorbet and Mrs. S. Gorbet Tuesday morning from Columbus, Ohio. The consignment included Bahadur, Gold Step, Jadaan, Lisa Belle, Port o Play, Play Master, Hell Diver. Jockey S. "Buddy" Vail accompanied the shipment and will make application for a license to ride. Trainer L. Meripol announced that he has added four thoroughbreds, the property of William Schmidt, of Chicago, to the large string that he is training. They are Coffee Cup, Hay Image, Like Image and Which Image. Others under the supervision of Meripol are Cardaronne and Jeffery for J. Newman; Merry Cardinal, Sainte DEspoir for Mrs. G. Stonesifer; Red Go, High Man, Safia and Gallant Boy for W. H. Sawaya. C. Adwell, trainer for Chappel Brothers, arrived at Hawthorne Tuesday morning with twelve racers, the majority of them two-year-olds, which he is training for the Rockford, 111., sportsmen and breeders. G. Marcus was an arrival from the Fox Valley Jockey Clubs track Tuesday morning with Bonnie Marita and Merry Freda, the two horses he is training for W. C. Fox. According to figures in the hands of racing secretary Julius G. Reeder, there are 148 trainers registered at the Hawthorne course, with 813 thoroughbreds. The horses are divided in the following manner: Two-year-olds, 268; three-year-olds, 223; four-year-olds and older, 322. Leo Canfield, veteran reinsman, who recently arrived from Kentucky, departed for Latonia Tuesday night, after having had the mount on Idle Way in the second race at Hawthorne Tuesday afternoon. Frank Fisher, who supervises the parking of motor vehicles at all Chicago tracks as well as several of the Texas courses, is on the job at Hawthorne and handling matters in his usual splendid manner. William Davis, a rider of prominence a number of years ago, was an arrival from Miami, Fla., where he spent the winter. Davis served as one of the patrol judges at Arlington Park last year. G. B. Scallon brought in My Surprise, Transport and Centennial from Aurora Tuesday morning. He is training the trio of racers for Mrs. G. B. Scallon. Paul Keester, a prime favorite with Chicago racing fans a few seasons ago, is finding it difficult reducing and it is probable that his engagements will be confined to stakes during the Illinois season.
