AGAWAM TURF NOTES o $ William A. Shawcross, wealthy Rhode Island sportsman who will act as one of the stewards, dropped in to pay his respects to the official family before taking over his duties on Wednesday. Mr. Shawcross was very enthusiastic in his statements regarding the future of horse racing and pointed out that it is the one sport which is enjoying great popularity throughout the country. He spent the winter in California, where he witnessed the 00,000 Santa Anita Handicap. James C. Thornton, managing director of Agawam Park and who formerly was the first single commissioner of racing in the state of Rhode Island, is one of the busiest men on the track, arranging for the opening Wednesday. Mr. Thorntons suggestions were largely instrumental in building up the largest "tote" in America. Credit for this accomplishment can be given to his ability and integrity, which makes him respected by horsemen throughout the country. Jockeys Cooper, Kopel, McMann and Smith are expected to don silks at the Agawam track. Evangelist has been entered in the Agawam Handicap, to be run opening day. Agawam Park has been fortunate to have two holidays, Memorial Day and Independence Day falling in their thirty-seven day meeting.
