FOREVER YOURS DRIVING WINNER AT HAWTHORNE 9 TORO FILLY COURAGEOUS Overcomes Determined Stretch Challenges of Nashs Sandstone. . Douglas Park Purse Feature of Cicero Card Mr. James Surprises in Maywood Handicap. CICERO, 111., May 28. Making her second three-year-old start, Forever Yours, Mr3. Ethel V. Mars queenly three-year-old filly and winner last year of the Arlington Lassie Stakes and Saratogas Spinaway Stakes, was a driving winner of the Douglas Park Purse, one of two features on todays program of the Chicago Business Mens Racing Association at Hawthorne. Returning to competition after a short "freshening up" following her failure to train satisfactorily for the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs, the Chicago-owned daughter of Toro and Winsome Way opposed five of her sex, including the older Ep and Recovery, gave a striking exhibition of courage and at the same time showed more than ordinary speed in mastering another local entry, the Shandon Farms Sandstone. Running the three-quarters under fine conditions in 1:124,S, the Mars miss defeated her stubborn rival by a length and in an j extended stretch tilt with the Shandon representative lost and retrieved the lead. Howard Oots Marica completed a clean sweep of the first three places for the three-year-olds with Ep fourth. Neither Recovery nor Blue Bud, which completed the field, ever figured prominently. STUBBORN BATTLE. Basil James, astride Sandstone and trying for his third win of the afternoon, allowed Forever Yours to jump into early command and show the way by a clear margin as he rated his mount under snug restraint for almost four furlongs. Shortly after entering the stretch, James vigorous urging of the Shandon horse brought so much response that she soon headed the winner, only I to have her courage excelled as they battled it out nip and tuck in the final furlong. Back of them Marica showed an even performance to lead the others. With Forever Yours scoring the third win for the favorites, the result took on added popularity and there was much applause for the winner as Alfred Robertson brought her back to the stand. She carried 108 pounds and the engagement was her first since April when she met defeat in her first start as a three-year-old at Arlington Downs. An upset came out of the Maywood Handicap, also over six furlongs and the cofeature, when Mrs. M. E. OTooles Mr. James, paying almost 15 to 1, accounted for the sprint over Money Getter, Ding Bin, Slim Rosie, Salaam and South Gallant. Money Getter, which raced to second place a length back and a neck before Ding Bin, had the largest following. After Slim Rosie had set the pace for more than two-thirds of the distance, the winner bumped his way to the front and in continuing to swerve after reaching the lead, reduced Ding Bins chances, though Money Getter, which raced wide throughout, enjoyed clear sailing. With better luck Ding Bin might have taken second honors. Ridden by R. R. Simpson, the OToole horse ran the distance in the same time as Forever Yours. He carried 106 pounds and his victory marked his second in successive starts, he having won the last of two engagements at Aurora. CALCULATOR EASILY. Valdina Farms Calculator, a son of Upset, experienced little difficulty in winning over a small band of juvenile maidens in the opening race, for which Overplay, which finished second, was held in such high esteem that he went to the post an odds-on choice. He was defeated by about two and one-half lengths, the winner jumping into a wide lead immediately after the start and once in the van always held his company safe. Minor honors went to Glassy Eye a Calumet Farm youngster that was making his first public appearance. T. C. The Worden filly won easily but the finish between Alice Jean, Jabberie and Miss Gravity for second, third and fourth place was so close that the placing judges called for a photograph before placing the trio in that order. Foxiana, racing under C. W. Bidwills Chicago Stable colors and an even money chance in the betting, carried apprentice James to his second victory in successive races when she made an utter show of her rivals in the third race, at six furlongs. Reserved off the early pace of Tracker and Rapid Bells, the Chicago Stable seven-year-old swept to the front in the stretch and, drawing out rapidly in the final three-sixteenths, won by six lengths. Finishing resolutely, Flight of Gold forced the tired Tracker out of second place when within a few strides of the finish, while Petty Taw, which saved fourth money, trailed Tracker by some four lengths. Trinchera, veteran sprinter in the T. C. Worden stable, went down to defeat as the publics choice among six brought together for the fourth race, also over six furlongs. Ridden by James, he dwelt momentarily at the start and, after being rushed into the lead, failed to hold it in the stretch, where J. Carters Chimney Top and Kieva, carrying C. E. Davidsons colors, drove past to lead him to the finish. Chimney Tops winning margin was a length and a half. When within a few strides of the finish, James right foot slipped from the stirrup iron, but it had no bearing on the horses performance. J. Nolan was astride the winner. The stable of E. McGrath, consisting of Grandmas Girl, Judge Lewe, Bar Play and Teernahilla, has been placed in charge of trainer R. Higgins, who succeeds C. C. Miller. A. J. Sabath, president of Hawthorne, and Mrs. Sabath left for Washington to attend the graduation of their daughter, Diane Sabath. 1 -r . 1 fi T. -O till. II- n t . I I 1. ll
