LAT0NIA TURF NOTES s a Jockey Leo Canfield arrived here from Hawthorne and lost no time getting into action. He will remain here throughout the meeting. Freddie Staton has applied for a stall for the horse Idle Way which now is at Hawthorne. The horse probably" will be here before the end of the week. Jockey Melvin Lewis has reconsidered and decided to abandon his comeback campaign. He plans to return to his ranch at Montrose, Colo., to take care of his interests there. One of the leading riders in the country several years ago, Lewis accepted one mount here before announcing his decision to quit the sport once more. The report that jockey Louis Ruder was seriously ill at his home in Latonia was spiked when he put in an appearance at the track and galloped several horses. C. E. Gibson arrived here from Louisville with the horses Valley Prince and Midlanda. Jockey Gilbert Elston, a top rider several years ago, is putting in some strenuous work getting down to riding weight. He is galloping horses daily for Tom Young and was to have resumed his saddle work Wednesday. He was engaged to ride Feezie, but the horse was withdrawn from the second race. Elstons comeback was delayed somewhat at Louisville, where he was injured when run down by an automobile-
