SWEEPSTAFF TAKES FINALE Scores Most Important Victory of Year in William Hendrie Memorial at Woodbine Park. TORONTO, Ont., May 30. Sweepstaf f , principal performer of the home-bred division in the stable of H. C. Hatch, kept his record unstained this season and chalked up his second and most important victory of the season when he gave his usual honest performance to account for the twenty-seventh running of the William Hendrie Memorial Handicap, worth ,495 and featuring the final program of the Ontario Jockey Clubs spring meeting at Woodbine Park today. Carrying top weight of 117 pounds, the chestnut son of Sweepster and Saffron, produced at the faxm of his owner, demonstrated that his assignment was not difficult when he led from the fall of the flag to complete the distance in advance of the Parkwood Stables Epicurus, with Lady Mar-nock, from the Mrs. J. Badame barn, a driving third to barely nose out A. J. Halli-wells No Retreat, which easily led home Shady Well, Chickpen, Trickys Son and Hurry Fox. Coupled in the race with Chickpen, the Hatch pair ruled the choice in the speculation and made their presence felt early in the running when Sweepstaff moved into immediate command while Chickpen held third position, following in pursuit of Lady Marnock, which went along in chase of the older Hatch colorbearer. Through the back stretch this order was maintained, while Lindberg was rating Epicurus before the others. Reaching the final turn Lady Marnock threatened the ultimate winner, but Young was ready for the move and began driving his mount. In the meantime Chickpen had fallen back and Lindberg had started his drive with Epicurus and swung around until he was at the heels of Sweepstaff, a furlong from home. With both lads riding desperately, Sweepstaff never slackened his speed and, driven along smartly, reached the finish with a length to spare. Epicurus, unable to gain on the winner, managed to draw away a length and one-half before Lady Marnock, which barely succeeded in lasting for the verdict over No Retreat. A large crowd was out for the closing program of the spring season, and the sport was exciting. Two features, headed by the William Hendrie Memorial Handicap, topped the card, and betting was brisk all during the afternoon. The fifty-first running of the Woodbine Steeplechase Handicap, listed third, resulted more or less in a farce when only two of the four starters completed the distance of two and one-half miles, with Celeritas easily proving superior to achieve his second triumph of the meeting for W. T. Northgrave, Jr. His score that took place with Wilfrid G. of the Lowfield Farms as his only opponent, was recorded by a dozen lengths, they having the contest to themselves after twelve of the seventeen fences were taken. Pekisko, after losing his rider at the twelfth fence, was remounted by P. McCann, a spec-1 tator, but was not allowed the third money
