VOTE BOY IN CLOSE FINISH I Takes Measure of Golden Fate to Win Memorial Day Handicap at Agawam by a Nose. AGAWAM, Mass., May 30. Vote Boy, gelded son of Torchilla, carried the green and white crossed silks of T F. Swords to a nose victory in the Memorial Day Handicap, feature event of the holiday program, before a crowd that numbered close to the 25,000 mark. A nose back of the winner came Mrs. E. E. Russells Golden Fate, which in turn led Wise Anne, from the Mrs. W. C. Weant barn. Aneroid saved the fourth money- for owner Edward Brun-nev, while Prince Fox, coupled with Wise Anne was in fifth position. Singing Heart broke first of the field of eight, but Wise Anne soon displaced her, J the SteAvart filly dropping right out of con- j tention. Golden Fate moved up to force the issue with Wise Anne, while Vote Boy was racing along under snug wraps in fourth position. Midway the stretch turn, Golden Fate had put Wise Anne away, opening up a short lead, but Vote Boy had just commenced to make his bid, circling around on the outside of the leading pair. He was right at the heels of the leading pair, as they straightened out for the final run home. Vote Boy went slightly wide but Rosengarten, who had the mount, quickly straightened him out and, riding with brilliant form, slowly but steadily wore down the margin that separated him from Golden Fate. The pair was on even terms at the twenty yard pole and, in the final drive that ensued, Vote Boy proved the gamest sticking his nose out in front to earn the judges decision right at the end. Clear but slightly cool weather greeted the capacity crowd that packed the grounds. The majority of events were accounted for by well backed choices over the fast strip.
