FAVORITES DISAPPOINT Public Choices Fare Badly in Decision of Latonias Friday Card. Billbo Overtakes and Defeats Grand Duke in Featured Fountain Square Purse. LATONIA, Ky., June 5 Favorites fared badly in the majority of races presented this afternoon at the Latonia Jockey Clubs beautifully situated course, but in spite of this an interesting brand of thoroughbred sport was provided for the good sized gathering of fans who attended. Two allowance races topped the eight-race program, which was staged under clear skies and over a fast track, with the Fountain Square Purse, a sprint of six furlongs, proving the most attractive event. F. P. Letellier, New Orleans turfman, furnished the winner of this race in Billbo, which overhauled Grand Duke in a courageous stretch drive to gain the verdict by a length. Mrs. H. H. Hectors Wise Duke, which was accorded the most support, landed third. Leaving the starting gate like a streak. Grand Duke succeeded in outrunning his rivals with Kingsbury in second place and Billbo third, with Wise Duke not far behind. This order was maintained until approaching the stretch, where Kingsbury began to falter. As the field swung around the bend, Billbo was forced wide, causing the loss of several lengths, but this was not sufficient to defeat the chestnut colt, for he swiftly gained on Grand Duke and drew away to a clear advantage in the last seventy yards of the three-quarters of a mile dash. CHIGRE BY THREE LENGTHS. The Gallaher Farm Purse at five furlongs, the secondary feature and fourth on the program, brought together a promising array of two-year-olds. H. C. Applegates Chigre made it two "victories in as many trips to the post, winning by the comfortable margin of three lengths over Panay, while Carl S. took third money and Sweepalot, the odds-on choice, landed in fourth place. Jockey Hank Gower was in the saddle and handled the chestnut gelding in expert fashion, allowing Panay to dominate the race for three furlongs. Chigre then moved past the early pacemaker and got to the front with comparative ease. He increased his advantage as the race progressed and could have had an even greater margin had his rider elected to ride him out. Chigre made the initial start of his career on May 28 at Latonia and was returned winner in a contest designed for maiden juveniles. The second straight success for the gelding was impressive in view of the easy manner in which it was accomplished. Shining Jewel, racing in the colors of Childs and Walker, proved an easy winner over eleven other sprinters in the six furlongs opener, accounting for the decision by Continued on third page. The four-year-old brown gelding forced Parade Step to set a stiff pace, for a half mile, but after entering the stretch, swiftly took command and was never threatened during the remainder of the contest. Thomas Piatts bay filly, Flip Flap, graduated from the maiden ranks when she took into camp a field of eleven other juveniles over the five furlongs distance in the second event, defeating Glowset, the favorite, by one length. Innis Jones was third. Nogalo was first to show in front when the start came after six and a half minutes delay at the post and led for the opening quarter. Flip Flap assumed the lead rounding the far turn and remained there to the end. Glowset made up considerable ground but was unable to overtake the winner. The third event, another six furlongs dash for plater sprinters, resulted in a victory for Shady Brook Farms Chauvenet, which came from behind to defeat South Bend and Noma F. in a driving finish. Rettef and Jack W., two most favored by the bettors, failed" to get any portion of the purse. Displaying her customary early speed, Noma F. led until well straightened out in the stretch, where Chauvenet challenged upon the outside and overhauled Sunshine Boy, Rettef and Noma F. to get the decision.
