QUALIFIES FOR DERBY Jimmie Cabaniss Earns Right to Start for Detroit Prize. Scores in Allowance Affair at Motor City Track Eushaway Works Out Between Races. DETROIT, Mich., June 5. Jimmie Cabaniss, hope of J. Shirley Riley, Virginia sportsman, for Detroit Derby honors, and a recent graduate from the maiden ranks, assured himself a place among the probable field for the 5,000 added fixture, to be renewed here on next Saturday, when he was an easy winner of the third race, an allowance affair that was one of the best races offered at Detroit this afternoon. Bomar Stables Blue Alice was second, and Yankee Skipper third. Jimmie Cabaniss triumph came shortly before A. G. Tarns Rushaway, a triple Derby winner and one of the leading eligibles for the local prize, breezed three-quarters in 1:14 Vfc and pulled up the mile in l:41iand. There was a short delay before the three-quarters sprint, which Jimmie Cabaniss ran in 1:12 under 109 pounds, three of "which was over weight. He was a nine to ten choice and was ridden by Lee Hardy. Away in a tangle, Jimmie Cabaniss did not reach his stride until near the final three . furlongs, where he moved into second place and, steadily wearing Yankee Skipper down, forged to the front in the stretch. The second nose finish of the day came with the Petite Cote Claiming Purse, that served as the sixth event and co-feature, when Paul Kelleys improved Merry Caroline drove down on the outside of Indian-town to beat him at the end. Mamas Choice was third, a length back of Indiantown and a half length before Surveyor, which led Lovely Spy by a length for fourth. Maystick was last in the small field under colors. A nose finish and popular score come with the opening dash for maiden two-year-olds when Rancho San Luis Rey Stables Sporting Green got up to beat Hearty by a nose at the end of five furlongs. Jadva was third, three lengths back of Hearty and two lengths before Flush. The winner, a California-bred daughter of Bistouri and Indemnity, followed in closest pursuit of Hearty and Jadva for nearly a half mile, where she drove into second position and,, guided to the outside of Hearty, she scored at the end. The placing judges awaited the picture before ordering the numbers displayed. The mutuel field, composed of Flush, ONan and Dan-gerlee, came in for good support and while ONan was never a factor, Flush and Dan-gerlee held prominent positions from the start. Charley Parke was astride his second winner of the meeting when he drove Blue Moon Stables John Doe to a neck success over Dixie Fox at the end of the three-quarters second race. Roxana S. was third, a length back of Dixie Fox and three lengths before Rosy Doon, which, but for being shuffled back at the far turn probably would have been closer at the end. Modesto became the first triple winner of the meeting when shcW.urncd back Sweep Myth, Brown Hilda ana eight others in the fourth race, also over six furlongs. In a nip and luck duel with Sweep Myth, the winner forged to the front near the final quarter and, after relinquishing the lead through racing wide on the stretch turn, came again to be half a length before Sweep Myth at tho finish. Brown Hilda came from far back to beat the tiring Miss Twinkling by a neck for minor honors. The winner Completed a double for Guymon. Lon-mcg, co-favorite with the winner, showed little. Showing improvement under Willie Saunders handling, Combahee, a well-meant good thing, got up to beat Prince Heather by a head in the rifth race. Gold Standard was third. Eight better-grade platers were under colors, with Chinese Empress forging to the front Hearing the final half mile. However, she was unable to withstand Prince Heather, which drew away rapi4ly after attaining leadership.
