LASSIE STAKES RICH PRIZE Hinety-Six Juvenile Fillies Remain Eligible for Race. Thirteen Starters Assure Gross Value of 5,000 Best of Sex in Country Among Entries. Ninety-six two-year-old fillies, a number greater than ever before, remain eligible to the Arlington Lassie Stakes, following the final payment on May 15. Only thirteen starters now are required for the dash of six furlongs on Arlington Parks program on July 18 to make a gross value of more than 5,000, the richest since the event was inaugurated in 1929. The Lassie Stakes closed last September 4 with 290 nominations of which 220 were kept eligible at the second payment January 15 with ninety-six making the third payment. A year ago, ninety-two fillies remained eligible at the third closing and a dozen of these went to the post with Forever Yours, from the Milky Way Farms Stable, proving victorious. Practically all of the good fillies so far developed are eligible for the Lassie and they are headed by Hal Price Headleys Apogee, a daughter of Pharamond II. and Summit, which has the Fashion Stakes at Belmont Park and the Old Colony Stakes at Narragansett Park to her credit. In the Fashion Apogee defeated Swiftply and in the Old Colony she brought to an end the winning streak of the sensational Planetoid. In her last start, Apogee ran second in the Juvenile Stakes at Belmont Park in which she was the only filly in the field. Nevertheless the Headley miss was called upon to take up top weight on the scale and lost by a head to Scintillator, which carried 119 pounds to her 122 pounds. Behind her was such clever colts as Billionaire and Air-flame, the latter holder of the worlds record for three furlongs suffering his first defeat. Joseph E. Wideners Magic Circle and Wheatley Stables Drawbridge, both of which have won in impressive fashion at Belmont Park, as well as Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Swiftply, are other eastern-owned fillies of much promise kept eligible to the Lassie. Dixiana, owned by Charles T. Fisher; Calumet Farm of Warren Wright and Milky Way Farms of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars share the honor of having the most eligibles to the Lassie, each with five. Calumet Farm is the only one of the trio which hasnt provided a winner in the stake, Mata Hari having won for Dixiana and Forever Yours for Milky Way Farms Stable. Audley Farm, Mrs. John Hertz and C. V. Whitney are other nominators to this years renewal of the Lassie, whose silks have been triumphant in previous runnings, the latter having won with Top Flight and Motto. Dixiana has named Shootin High and Foolish Moment, both of which have shown fine promise in their races this season. Not Asleep is one of the Milky Way Farms candidates, while Lady Erne, a sister to Had-agal and Pansy Walker is among the Calumet eligibles. Other prominent nominators to the Lassie include Bomar Stable, E. R. Bradley, Norman W. Church, W. R. Coe, Coldstream Stud. John J. Coughlin, Marshall Field, Fox-catcher Farms, Greentree Stable, Katherine Elkins Hitt, John E. Hughes, Willis Sharpe Kilmer, King Ranch, John Marsch, Shandon Farm, Tranquillity Farm, Three Ds Stock Farm, John Hay Whitney and Herbert M. Woolf.
