! VICARESS IN WINNING FORM Woodward Filly Returns to Races and Triumphs Over Rust. Daughter of Flying Ebony Accounts for Belle Claire Handicap in First Start of Season. NEW YORK, N. Y., June 5. William Woodwards Vicaress, the daughter of Flying Ebony and Valkyr, a Man o War mare, was brought back to the races in winning form by J. Fitzsimmons at Belmont Park today when she was an easy winner of the Belle Claire Handicap. This was a mile contest confined, to fillies and mares and to score the Woodward miss took the measure of the consistent Rust, which races for Louis Strube, and third went to the Howe Stables Kate, which, like Vicaress, was making her first appearance of the year. C. V. Whitneys Two Bob, winner of the Kentucky Oaks and. the only three-year-old of the small company, was fourth, and the only other starter was Legionary. Another delightful day for the sport brought out a big crowd and the sport was up to the Belmont Park standard, though it was a card made up exclusively of overnight events. No time was lost at the post in the feature handicap, and Stout at once took command with Vicaress. As the Flying Ebony miss became established in her lead she was taken in hand and rated along at a pace that held the lead secure. Kate went along outside of her and she was also under snug restraint, while Legionary was outfooting Rust, and Two Bob brought up the rear. There was no change in these positions through the back stretch and, turning for home, except that near that turn Rust had moved up on the rail until she had headed Legionary to take third place. Swinging into the stretch, Stout went out slightly with Vicaress, forcing Kate to lose ground and then moved in again to threaten Rust, which was running along next to the rail. In danger of being shut off, Westrope took Rust from the rail after she had headed Kate in an effort to get past Vicaress. The Spanish Prince II. filly responded to. a drive with her usual honesty but she could not catch Vicaress, which was over the line a comparatively easy winner by two lengths. Rust had beaten Kate a like distance, and the other two were soundly beaten. C. V. Whitneys Tatterdemalion found a field he could whip in the Islip, at one mile," fashioned for three-year-olds that had never won three races other than claiming. At that the son of St. Germans had to be roused sharply in the stretch to beat the Brook-meade Stables Neap and far back of these W. Grahams Kievan took third from Rowes Crump, the only other starter. The opening five furlongs dash for juvenile platers of the better quality went to Mrs. George D.: Wideners Planetarium, ably ridden by Ira Hanford. Cardinalis carried the silks, of Mr. Nightingale into second place, with George D. Wideners Highmost, a stablemate of the winner, taking third from Match Point that raced for the Brodk-meade Stable. While the winning margin of Planetarium was half a length a photograph was required by the judges; which: verified this placing. " c . At the end of the card Maxwell Howards Polycletus stuck it out for six furlongs over the main course to be winner over Charles H. Thieriots Epical, and third went to Ral Parrs Star Porter. Polycletus was rushed right along from the start never to be headed, while Epical was as consistently second.
