TAUNTONS NEW TRACK MARK Lowers Mile and Seventy Mark at Agawam in Winning the Governors Purse. AGAWAM, Mass., June 5. George L. Hamiltons Taunton, ridden by jockey E. Tucker, won the Governors Purse over the one mile and seventy yards distance in the new track record time of 1:44, taking three-fifths of a second from the previous mark held by Manual. Some half length back of the winner was R. Robertsons Dancing Cloud, a neck in front of Sun Way of the J. Booker stable. Fourth money went to Dona Dulcin, from Mrs. E. M. Haymans string. With the most delightful weather of the present meeting the attendance showed an increase, a large crowd being out to view the various contests. With little or no delay at the starting gate, starter Gregory dispatched the field of six away to an almost perfect start, with Dona Dulcin favored by the inner position, sprinting into the lead as they made the run to the first turn. Cooper had Dancing Cloud right at her saddle girth before they had reached the back stretch, followed by Big Play, then came Taunton and Sun Way, while Mine Boy trailed the fillies. At the turn out of the back stretch Cooper called upon Dancing Cloud and the latter quickly displaced Dona Dulcin as the leader, but Tucker had also made his bid with Taunton, traveling fast on the outside. Entering the home stretch, Dancing Cloud showed signs of tiring and Taunton then took the lead but was under a hard drive all the last sixteenth to maintain his position when Sun j Way loomed in the picture. Sticking it out with bull dog tenacity, Taunton was safely past the wire while the judges called upon the camera for the third time during the afternoon to aid them in placing the second ; and third horses.
