a Thousands Visit New Keene-land Track at Lexington . , -a Everything in Readiness for Thursdays Opening Indications Point to About 600 Horses Being Available for Initial Meeting. LEXINGTON, Ky., Oct 12. With thousands of persons visiting Keeneland at its preview yesterday, interest is running very high in the Blue Grass area in the opening Thursday of the new course sponsored by many of the countrys leading breeders, owners and Lexington merchants. The many visitors began arriving early in the morning, and a steady stream of automobiles passed into the beautiful property until nightfall. . The visitors inspected every detail of the plant, paying particular attention to the operation of the electric totalizator, the first such apparatus installed in this section of the country. Except for minor details the track was pronounced ready today by general manager Roy Carruthers. The task of completing the beautification program was being carried out by a large force of workmen, but the racing, mutuels and catering department all were in a position to begin the meeting immediately. Several hundred horses were quartered at Keeneland Saturday, and this number was augmented ovec the week-end by the arrival of several stables from Chicago, New York and Maryland. With many more shipments due during the next two days, a full complement of nearly 600 horses is expected to be available for the opening. MUDDY TRACK. Rains during the latter part of last week left the track in muddy condition and very little training was done yesterday and this morning, but the course dried out steadily under a warm sun and is expected to be in safe condition tomorrow. Trainers who have had the opportunity to work horses at a speedy clip when the track was dry believe it will develop into one. of the fastest in the country. Racing secretary Charles McLennan returned this morning from Texas and will be in charge of the details of his office until Saturday, when he must go to Arlington Downs. He is being assisted by Sidney Brown, who has been here for two weeks. C. J. FitzGerald, Jr., who will serve as the regular steward, came from his home in Bay City, Mich., and is aiding in the operation of the secretarys office. The largest establishment arriving recently was the Rosedale Stable of George Clarke, which came in charge of trainer George C. White. Jockey T. Dickinson is expected to do the riding for the stable, which numbers nine horses. They are Silk Mask, Bandalore, Kentucky Blues, Hat Check, Batman, Lake Continufii on thirty-fourth viae.. John Hay Whitney sent Gleeman, Upper Berth, Sleep Well, Peggy Porter and Royal Raiment here from Belmont Park in charge of trainer James W. Healy. Johnny Gilbert, one of the countrys leading riders, is due before the opening of the meeting to handle the horses of the noted international sportsman. From Maryland came Indomitable, Sweet as Sugar and Ballerina, which will sport the silks of Walter M. Jeffords. In the absence of Preston Burch they will be saddled by J. P. Saliee, who has Gallette for- Burch, as well as seven others for Thomas Piatt, T. C. Piatt and Dr. C. E. Haygard, local patrons. Joseph E. Wideners silks will be carried by Fitter, Fair Oaks and Par, which are in charge of D. E. Stewart. Dr. John Baird stated today that he will run Log, a two-year-old daughter of Bull Dog, under Elmer Dale Shaffers colors on opening day. This filly is being trained at Coldstream Farm by Dan Baird, as is also Lull, which likewise is expected to run during the meeting. MYRTLEWO OJ STARTER. Brownell Combs.Myrtlewood, assigned top weight of 128 pouhds, is expected to accept in the Keene Handicap, opening day feature, if the track is fast; otherwise she will wait until Saturday, to start in the Ashland Stakes, a handicap- for fillies and mares, in which she must shoulder 126 pounds. The Keene is at six furlongs, and the Ashland is over the mile and one-sixteenth distance. Gleeman, Black Buddy, Visigoth, Crossbow II., Fraidy Cat and Pelerine are other starters expected in the -inaugural feature. Funeral services for Patrick J. Gorman, who at one-time was interested in the ownership bf a small stable, were held at the grave Jn Calvary Cemetery here this morning.
