SILAS IN FIRST 1936 VICTORY Beats Reminiscent in Columbus Day Purse at River Downs. Vi-rsr Given Smart Ride by Tyrus Meloche Numerous Surprises Feature Sport at Cincinnati Course. CINCINNATI, Ohio, Oct. "12. Mrs. Bessie Franzheims Silas scored -his first victory of-the year and furnished another surprise in the program offered the largest week-day gathering of the meeting at River Downs when he was an easy winner of the Columbus Day Purse, sixth and principal attraction on the afternoon program. Reminiscent, the favorite, tired badly after leading the small field of six to the final furlong, while third honors went to Judge Kavanagh. Corum was much the best of Bereit, the second choice, with Whatway being eased up after reaching the stretch. Completing a double for T. Meloche and away slowest of all, the three-year-old Crucifixion gelding worked his way. forward while Reminiscent was enjoying a big advantage and Bereit and Judge Kavanagh were battling for minor honors. .After reaching the stretch Meloche drove the winner into second place on the outside and during the final sixteenth he wore down Reminiscent, to be drawing away from him at the close. Bereit gave way in the drive and Corum, which was far back for three-quarters; came on to take fourth laurels. Whatway was eased up when he was hopelessly beaten. TRACK IN BAD WAY. Although no more favorable weatner could have prevailed for the opening of the second full week of the meeting, the track was in the worst condition in years. Only the more sturdy performers were able to negotiate the footing and, as was to be expected, surprises were in order. Supporting the feature was a six furlongs sprint for bstter grade sprinting platers and this resulted in another of the many easy victories and the first popular score when W. J. Trcacys Lexington-owned Buddie Treacy triumphed over" Bropny, Toni and four others. Willie Garner- handled the-fouryear-old Fair Wind gelding in superb fashion. After saving him while Odd Star and Jildac Rose went out to show the way to- the far turn, Garner moved him into command nearing the final quarter. Entering the stretch Buddie Treacy increased his advantage rapidly and during the final quarter Brophy, wiTTcii was taken to the outside, reached second place. Although he failed to menace the winner, he held Toni safe. ; Jildac Rose tired after five furlongs and Odd Star quit rapidly in the drive. House Warmer, which races for Mrs. C. Holland, won his first victory since last winter and his second of the year when he triumphed over Jordan, Assist and eight others in the three-quarters of the first race. Ridden by Tyrus Meloche and away fast, the winner raced Onside into defeat during the opening five-sixteenths and, increasing his advantage thereafter,, came to the finish three lengths before the heavily supported Jerdan, which lasted to beat Assist by a half a length. With the exception of Onside, which quit, and Bill Lutz. which finished fourth, the others were never factors. MATE TEA UNEXPECTEDLY. Furnishing one of the biggest surprises of the meeting Mate Tea, from the stable of R. W. Pearce, was an easy winner of the second race, which was a -six furlongs affair for fillies and marcs; - Rolanda "Was second and Nahallac third. Workingher way forward steadily while "Betty Rejoice and Rolanda dominated the pace, the winner, ridden by Bert Thornton, took command in the last sixteenth to be two lengths before Rolanda at the end. Some four lengths separated the latter and Nahallac, which held third place the greater part of the sprint. Delma Dunn, a well regarded choice, appeared not to prefer the track and was always far back. Prohibition proved best of the platers which met at one mile and a sixteenth in the third race. Paradox Girl, a heavily supported choice, was second and Hagerman third. Never far back while Paradox Girl and Royal Duchess were showing the way, the winner moved into command nearing the final quarter and, after being taken to the inside for the drive, increased his advantage rapidly. The finish found him three lengths before Paradox Girl, which led Hagerman by a length for second. Royal Duchess held on for. three-quarters, but Fair Sara was done after a half mile. Another favorite disappointed when Paul T. finished third to Locust Ridge Stables Step Ahead and Fair Cynthia at the end of the fourth race at one mile and a sixteenth. Ridden by E. Rodriguez and saved while Ceallaigh, a strongly supported second choice, and Fair Cynthia were showing the way. Step Ahead moved into the lead approaching the final furlong and, drawing away steadily from there on, came to the close two lengths before Fair Cynthia, which lasted to beat Paul T. by a head for third Ceallaigh quit badly after leading the field to the far turn, and the others were never prominent
