1 I j BILL FARNSWORTH VICTORIOUS Gets Up in Final Stride to Receive Decision Over Miss Merriment. Emileo Knocked Out of Contention Soon After the Start -.Testing in Popular Triumph in Fifth. . " v . NEW YORK, N. Y.v Oct. 12.I2rJaty.Can-sidys- Bill Farnsworthj in a gamely run finish, was winner of the six furlongs of the Interborough Handicap at Jamaica today, adding ,905 to his earnings. To score he ran down Victor Emanuels Miss Merriment, and well back of the pair Mrs. Ether V. Mars" The Fighter readily took the measure of Sgt Byrne,- the horse for which he was disqualified in their previous meeting: The running of the racewithout taking anything away from the winner was1 an unsatisfactory one by reason of a bad start and the fact that Emileo was knocked completely out of contention soon after the break. The finish was close enough to call for a photograph, .though it was evident that Bill Farnsworth had caught the mare and so the photograph revealed. There was a big holiday crowd out for the sport, and, while there was a chill in the air, bright sunshine made conditions pleasant. LONG DELAY AT START. Miss Merriment, as usual, caused a long delay at the post in the feature and eventually, after a delay of almost ten minutes, was taken to a position outside the stalls. Cas-sidy endeavored to prevent her from having a flying start, as she" so often .has. She was taken far back of the others, but that was -I offset when she was -in motion at the word, and it was not long before she was leading the pack. She had to run a first quarter in ;22i to take "command, but that was fast enough to carry her into a lead of two lengths, where. Workman took a slight hold of her head, dropped over on the rail to save all the ground possible, and as Mower chased after her she increased her advan- tage slightly when the half was reached in :46f,. JVt that time The Fighter and Bill . Farnsworth were closely lapped on Mower and they soon put the son of Sickle away. Sgt. Byrne was far back of these and Emileo was hopelessly out of the running, It was not until a furlong from home that Miss Merriment began to shorten stride, and , there Bill Farnsworth raced past the others . to give her chase. Stout was putting up a, I vigorous finish "on the son of Crack Brigade and he continued to close until it was his I head that was in front at the line. The j Fighter had hung under punishment, but he i had no trouble beating Sgt. Byrne for third, finishing-three lengths back of the Victor Emanuel mare. ANOTHER FOR JACOBS. The secondard feature "of the day, the Long Island Claiming Stakes, worth ,365, ; to the winner, went to Mrs. Ethel D. Jabocs Jesting, adding one more to the leading score of her husband, HIrsh Jacobs. The daughter of Snob II. won with plenty to spare over .Buckley M. Byers Thorson and Michael So- kols Whizzaway beat Abner for third. The only other starter was the temperamental., Quel Jeu. There was some delay at the post and Quel Jeu was taken to the outside and well back of the field. This saw him last away and with little chance. Maiden two-year-old fillies met at five and a half furlongs in the first race, and brought about the graduation of That Onej a daughter of Whichone and Oval, that races for the Sage Stable. Sammy Renlck had her away from the inside stall gamely ! and she was good enough to lead throughout ; and be winner, by two lengths. The finish for the place was close between the Brook-meade Stables Guarded Queen: and the I Greentree Stables Scottish Mary, which might readily have been disqualified if she had not been beaten for that position. Guarded Queen followed, the pace, of the winner, but Scottish Mary raced outside of her and bumped her repeatedly, i, IN BEST FORM. Marshall A. Smiths Joy Ride, racing in his best form, led home the platers that met in the six furlongs of the second race. Headin Home, from the Howe Stable, easily took second place, with Mrs. C. Oliver Iselins Velvet Mask beating Singing Heart for third. The start was a bit straggling-with Singing Heart, and Malmaison away so badly as to have scant chance, while Social Error, Velvet Mask and Headin Home were all away well to show the way. Social Error did not last long when unable to shake off the other two, and then Joy Ride, which had. been in fourth position, raced through to take the command, and Headin Home went after him. They were outfooting Velvet Mask, though the son of Masked Marvel II. was still in striking distance. Going to the stretch turn, under a hustling ride by Seabo Joy Ride drew out slightly, and a furlong from the finish had a daylight lead. He was beginning to tire in the last furlong and Headin Home closed on him steadily, but could not make it and the winning margin was a neck. Velvet Mask hung under pressure to be another four lengths back, and then came Singing Heart, which had closed a considerable gap. One of the big thrills of the day came in the six furlongs of the third race when Warren Wrights Flying Banner and A. T. Allens Night Watch crossed the line on the same stride to require a photograph to decide the finish. Then Saunders, who rode Night Watch, lodged a claim of foul that was not allowed. Five lengths back of the battling pair, third went to Ethels Choice, and Royal Flight was fourth.
