CAPTAIN RED, a factor from the start, saved ground on the turns, responded to strong handling after five-eighths and wore down THE NILE in the closing strides. The latter, having good speed, made the pace under snug restraint and, though holding on well, failed to withstand the" winner. BATTING EYE, outrun for a half mile, was lucky to find racing room on the stretch turn while moving up and closed well. JULIA GRANT, never far back and on the outside throughout, failed to menace the leaders when put to pressure in the late stages. TRY FAIR closed well from a slow beginning. RAFFLES LAD, in close quarters early, was unable to get to the leaders when clear and then quit. "WELL HEELED had Speed for five-eighths and tired badly thereafter. BAY MEMOR. a factor from the start, held on fairly well and was easilv best of t.-e others. SASSAFRAS, slow to settle into its best stride, offered a mild challenge after five-eighths. WHITHARRAL, badly outrun for a half mile, finished stoutly when broucht to the outside for the drive. PREFERRED, unable to keep up. failed tn threaten. BLACK RIVER, mucli used in the early stages, failed to withstand the winner, but easily held the others safe. ANNA V. Li, never far back and saving ground, responded well to pressure in the final quarter. IIARPEN BELLE, forced back after three-eighths, challenged mildly after five eighths and then tired. PALM ISLAND, placed on the outside at the start and away poorly, improved his position steadily with a loss of ground in the final three-eighths and wore down HONORED SIR in the last eighth. The latter displayed good speed under energetic riding, but tired after reaching the last three-sixteenths. ROBERTA had no mishaps. MASTERPIECE, away fast but taken back on the second turn, dropped farther out of contention before reaching the final quarter, where he failed to rally. SALAAM, away slowlv. did not extend himself. PALAN, well up from the start, held on with good courace. SIR MIDAS, .away slowly, moved into contention after a quarter, but tired in the final drive. SKEETER did not threaten. PAPLAY, outrun for a half mile, gradually improved his position thereafter and closed gamely. JERRY II. moved up after a quarter but tired in the final eighth. HARRY RICHMAN was racing in a prominent position but met with interference when OUT PUT dropped back. The latter broke down after racing prominently for three-eighths.
