I RIVER DOWNS TURF NOTES $ Tom Young, track superintendent at Churchill Downs and Lincoln Fields, and Clifford Burke, his chief assistant, motored from Louisville for Mondays sport. On account of a heavy fog, which hung over the track until nearly 9 oclock, the training period Monday was a brief one. Friends of Luther Goose, a brother of Ros-coe Goose and a former rider, were grieved to learn of the unexpected death of his wife at their home in Louisville. Nominations for the ,500 added Cincinnati High Weight Handicap will close Tuesday. It is open to horses of all ages and is a sprint at five and a half furlongs. Jockey J. Pollard departed for Empire City where he will join the Mrs. C. S. Howard stable. Plans were changed for apprentice T. Meloche and instead of accompanying the Howard string to Empire City, he will leave Tuesday for Tanforan. Jockey E. Yager, one of the leading riders at Jamaica and a product of Covington, "Ky., arrived here Monday and will be in colors Tuesday. O. F. Woodwards Jadva received several cuts while filling her engagement in the Gibson Hotel, and will be on the shelf for some time. H. W. and W. J. Youngs Nimble Pins arrived from Kansas City and was turned over to R. W. Pearce to train. Robert Mitchell, one of the few negro boys, lost his apprentice allowance with the close of Saturdays program. Mitchell rode his first winner at Agawam last fall. Irving Kort sent Timorous to his farm, where she will be retired for breeding purposes. P. J. Van has been engaged to train Georgia Lily for Mrs. K. Newingham. Joe Shakespeare, who holds the contract on Claude J. Helphenstine, believes the lad has the makings of a great rider. The lad is sixteen years old and hails from Covington, Ky. Cool and Butch were added to starter Wingficlds schooling list.
