, JOHN WERRING PROVES BEST J Gets Nose Decision Over Bacon in Rockingham Thriller. Foster Gelding Gives Victor Hard Battle All the Way Hot Cake Wins Fourth Straight Purse. SALEM, N. H., Oct 19. In one of the closest finishes of the meeting, John Wer- ring earned the decision in the fifth event, feature race on Rockingham Parks Monday J program. Approximately 15,000 patrons journeyed to the popular Salem course to view the sport The Bristol Stable colt was right in the contention from the start of the six furlongs dash and battled it out with O. L. Fosters Bacon for the early lead, took it and then lost it to Onrush in the stretch, only to come again at the wire and win. Bacon kept up there to save the show. The event was the best of a featureless Monday card at Rockingham, as the New Hampshire Jockey Club swung into the final days of its autumn meeting, but proved all the thrills of a bona fide handicap as the ,500 to ,200 platers battled it out Bacon, set in the outside post, was off on top, but Bierman rushed John Werring right up on the rail to start a battle for the lead that lasted to the turn. Here the Wrack colt turned on speed and nudged Bacon out of the lead, only to have Onrush move up and challenge on the turn, with Bacon still in pursuit. Dunice Dubois got the Sweep On gelding up in front as they swung into the stretch and set sail for home, but it was only a brief triumph. Bierman gave John Werring whip and heel, and the colt came again to battle it right out to the line in a race that was replete with thrills. Bacon was still right behind them. Cloudy weather was the order, but despite the threatening skies, one of the best Monday crowds of the meeting was on hand. BARBA RIDES WELL. Johnny Barba continued his riding streak in the first, piloting Medway Stables Amqui, at better than 9 to 1, home in the six furlongs opener, making it a front running victory throughout It was an extremely close call for second and third, with the favored Douglas F. and Hoosiers -Pride crossing the line a length and a half behind the winner. The camera favored the latter. The six furlongs second produced the first disqualification of the meeting when the stewards allowed a claim of rough riding in the stretch against Merrill Greer, who had the mount on Mrs. C. Tumins Tramway. He was suspended for the .remainder of the meeting and the long end of thepurse was given to Mrs! H. Mcllvains Transit Lady, scoring the second win in a row for the Transmute filly, which had been just bested at the wire by Tramway. The disqualification moved L. H. Haymakers Playmore to second place and gave the favorite, Gran-nys Trade, the show honors. The winner was ridden hard to keep up with the early grind but moved through on the inside at the turn and held on to the finish. CLEAN SPORT ALL THE WAY. Danny Sheas Clean Sport, under a good ride by Frankie Collins, a recent addition to the riding ranks from Canada, made every post a winner in the third, being held under slight restraint most of the way and rounded out a "Daily Double" combination that paid 12.10. Arthur Warners Two Edged, which kept up behind the winner all the way, finished a length and a half behind him and held that much advantage over A. OConnell, Paul Rattis gelding, which closed plenty of ground in the latter part of the route. The winner was off well and drew clear as the field tore into the back stretch, and from there on there was no overtaking him as Collins rated him nicely. The Liberty Lane Stables Durwrack got off on top in the five and a half furlongs fourth, took all Grimaldi had to give when the O. L. Foster gelding challenged and had enough left in the stretch to cross the wire a full length in front of the heavily backed favorite. Bain Marie. The winner never left the issue in doubt, although Bain Marie might have had a chance but for being shuffled back at the start Bierman gave her a hustling ride, but the best he could do was follow Durwrack in and hold a two lengths margin over Dead Calm.
