J J ROUSTABOUT AND WORKMAN Prove Winning Combination in Experimental Purse at Keeneland. Same Horses Meet Saturday Under Same Conditions Improved Weather Brings Out a Fair Crowd for Sport LEXINGTON, Ky., Oct. 19. Roustabout, durable five-year-old gelding by Chicle, from Traffic, in the C. V. Whitney stable, came from last place to capture the Experimental Purse, featuring todays Keeneland program. At home in the heavy going that prevailed and given a strong ride by Raymond Workman, Roustabout ran the six furlongs in 1:16 to defeat Morris Vehons Thread-needle by three-fourths of a length as Indomitable, owned by Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords, was slightly more than a length farther back. Made a slight favorite among the six contestants, Roustabout gave his supporters considerable uneasiness as he raced in fifth position during the first half mile and, when Workman swung him to the extreme outside at the stretch turn, even though the others also went wide, the Chicle gelding was full of run at this point and he gained steadily through the straightaway to take command with about fifty yards to go. As Workman kept after him he drew out quickly in the remaining distance. Indomitable had the most early speed and he turned into the stretch with two lengths to spare over Fraidy Cat, with Black Buddy close by but the latter two had had enough and soon dropped back. Midway in the stretch, Threadneedle went after the Jeffords three-year-old and took the lead at the sixteenth post only to give way an instant later to the winner. The same horses racing in the Experimental Handicap are scheduled to run back Saturday, carrying the same weights and with the same riders, providing the change in track conditions is excepted. Illness is another reason for possible substitution. Warmer weather and bright sun prevailed today and the track dried steadily and there was every hope it would be in good condition for tomorrows program. The improvement in the weather had the effect in bringing out a fair crowd and the wagering was satisfactory to the management HEADLEY COLORS TO FORE. Hal Price Headleys coors were carried to their first victory of the meeting when Rockabye Babe outran five other maiden two-year-olds at six furlongs in the opening event Second choice in the wagering went to Good Selka, the daughter of Supremus and Helens Babe defeated that filly from Mose Goldblatts stable by a length as S. M. Looks Miss Canary was three lengths away in third place. R. Dotter rode Rock- abye Babe, sending her to the front right after the start and rating her well to stand off Good Selkas bid at the furlong pole. Miss Canary probably would have finished closer up but for being caught in close quarters between Overtrick and Good Selka soon after reaching the stretch. The Headley stable scored a double when Sealine took the second half of the opening event by six lengths over Mrs. W. Crumps Van Nuys, with C. V. Whitneys Chilkat the favorite, at the heels of the latter. H. Beasy rode the daughter of Supremus and Seadrift, hustling her to the front in the run down the back stretch and going to the whip on the turn to make her draw away from the field. Van Nuys always was well up, but could not cope with the .winner, while Chilkat gained slowly during the final half mile. Sealine, like her stablemate, Rockabye Babe, was the second choice. Thomas Piatts Flip Flap made good for the talent in the third, another six furlongs event for two-year-old platers, leading all the way to .score by five lengths over Shan-don Farms Happy Road, as Forest B., owned by A. Stivers, was another two lengths back in third place. Lirma was next to the three other starters. R. Cheatham rode the winner and took no chances, shaking up the daughter of Transmute and La Luau in the stretch. Happy Road always was close up, while Lirma weakened after menacing on the turn. HOLLOW TRIUMPH. Our Willie, which finished third Saturday, came back to gain a hollow triumph over five other older maidens in the fourth event. Held at odds-on, Jessie Spencers three-year-old gelding by Waygood Sweet Face gave George South another winning mount South rated him in close attendance of Gallettes pace during the opening three furlongs, then , Our Willie took command without much , effort, to draw out to a margin of eight lengths over Ballard and Shannons Old Eli as P. M. Burchs seven-year-old mare finished in thir dplace. Luminta was fourth before thethree other starters. F. P. Letelliers Marie Jean scored her . second straight victory of the meeting when she came from last place to defeat four other sprinting platers in the fifth event j I I . , I
