OVERPLAY MAKES GOOD AGAIN Late Acquisition of F. H. Carpenter Takes Second River Downs Purse. Overtakes Early Leaders In Final Sixteenth for Most Important Victory of Career Paul T. Finally Scores. CINCINNATI, Ohio. Oct 19. Overplay, which F. H. Carpenter claimed at Lincoln Fields, won his second race for his new owner and scored his most important victory when he annexed the Falling Leaves Purse, fifth and principal offering as River Downs swung into its third full week of racing this afternoon. Col. Pete carried Michon Bros, silks into second place, a length hack of the winner and a head before I. J. Collins Eye Jay. Doctor C. N. saved fourth from the heavily-supported Alice Highland, Alkit, Bold General, Lonely Widow and Five Sisters, which pursued the leaders to the end of the six furlongs in the named order. Col. Pete and Doctor C. N. had the most speed of the nine non-winners of two events and they raced in close order to the stretch, with Alice Highland on the inside and the best of theothers. After turning for the run home, Col. Pete drew clear of Doctor C. N., but Overplay, which was unable to improve his position early, began to pick up the leaders and during the last sixteenth, wore down Doctor C. N. After subduing the latter, he made for Col. Pete and the finish found him drawing away with Col. Pete only lasting to beat Eye Jay, which lost ground throughout. After a half mile, Alice Highland found the task too strenuous and she gave way but the others showed nothing. HEAVY TRACK. Ideal weather conditions prevailed for the off-day card but the track was in a heavy and holding condition. As to be expected favorites had a hard time and Overplay furnished the third surprise. He carried the top impost of 116 pounds and ran the distance in the slow time of 1:21. Briny Deep, aging John P. Grier gelding, which races for Mrs. Henry Dattner, Detroit sportswoman, chalked up his second victory of the year and his first of the meeting when he lasted to beat Catch Fly by a half of a length at the end of six furlongs in the first race. Catch Fly, enjoying favoritism over the winner, was five lengths before Silver Tidings, which was third. Form players received a drubbing in the second race, alsfc at six furlongs, when Transpose finished third to A. L. Newmans Master Frank and Game Annie and Star Ballot, which shared favoritism with Transpose, was a badly beaten sixth. Transpose was the first in motion but he soon gave way to Monie Blue, which succumbed to the winner after leading the field of nine to the stretch. Game Annie drove down on the outside to be a length and a half back of the winner and four lengths before Transpose, which held the same advantage over Monie Blue. SECOND STRAIGHT. Onside, C. B. Shaffers mud-running son of Angon, scored his second straight success and was an easy winner of the third race, for which Pat C, which finished fourth, was a lukewarm favorite. Second went to Zipalong, with Sturdy Boy third. Always in closest pursuit of Sturdy Boy during the opening half mile of the three-quarters sprint, Onside, handled by P. Dirodis, took command nearing the final three-sixteenths and the finish found him four lengths before Zipalong, which made up ground in the drive. Pat C. lasted to beat Abercrombic a head for fourth laurels. Mrs. E. B. Carpenters Ilchester provided the first popular score when he was an easy winner of the fourth race, also at six furlongs and for mediocre platers. Brilliant Stone was second, and Indian Lace third. Well handled by Porter Roberts and unable to improve his position while Bea M., Be Quiet and Brilliant Stone dominated the pace, Ilchester drove through on the inside to take command approaching the final quarter and reach the finish six lengths in the van of Brilliant Stone, which came again after being shuffled back at the far turn. , Be Quiet, the second choice, was done after five-sixteenths.
