ENQUIRER HANDICAP WORKS Five Candidates Given Trial Gallops Over Covington Course for Saturdays Stake at Latonia. LATONIA, Ky., June 23. Five candidates for the ,500 added Enquirer Handicap, which comes up for decision for the twentieth time Saturday afternoon at Latonia over the mile and a sixteenth distance, were on the track this morning in preparation for their engagement. Woodberry, from the stable of Lucas B. Combs, displayed the most impressive trial recorded when he negotiated a handy three-quarters in 1:17. The three-year-old son of Broadside Victoire de Verdun accomplished the test in easy manner, going the first quarter in :26 and the half mile in :51. It was quite apparent that Woodberry could have demonstrated more speed had. his rider elected, but trainer Andy Ayers did not deem it advisable to seek top much speed from his charge. W. E. Snyders Vitamin B., which has been somewhat of a disappointment in previous engagements here, was sent a half mile as part of his prep by trainer J. R. Gregory and covered the four panels in :49, in handy fashion, with jockey Tracey Vercher in the saddle. Something more in the nature of a speed test was required of Mose Goldblatts Gillie, which engaged in a speed test of seven furlongs in which the following fractions were recorded, quarter in :24, half mile in :49, three-quarters in 1:15 and seven furlongs in 1:28, handily. Louise Hickmans Arabs Arrow and the Rosedale Stables Silk Mask are the other candidates for the Enquirer that engaged in workouts, the former stepping seven furlongs in 1:28, handily, while Silk Mask was timed the same distance in 1:32.
