MIKEL WINS AT RIVERSIDE; Illinois Sportsmans Silks Carried to Victory by Hekan Extremely Hot Weather Prevails. KANSAS CITY, Mo., June 23 The midweek offering at Riverside Park was made , up of eight races and in the majority of the ; contests the fields were large and evenly matched horses paraded to the post. While the entire card was turned over to the cheaper sort, interesting sport was the order of -the day and was thoroughly enjoyed by a good-sized crowd. While the weather was extremely hot, it was tempered somewhat by a cool breeze that swept in from the north, making conditions ideal in the stands. Hekan, a recent arrival from Omaha, carried;, the colors of the Illinois sportsman, W. A. Mikel, to an easy victory in the running of the first race, which was at five furlongs for two-year-olds, and ten of that age went postward. i Taking command from the start, Hekan jL" quickly drew away from the field and after r going a quarter mile had drawn clear. My Valley was the one to take up the burden of chasing the winner, with Kerrylite in third position, and this order was maintained throughout the running, and at the end Hekan was across the finish line five lengths in the van of My Valley. The latter beat Kerrylite six lengths for the place, while Kerrylite had but little trouble in saving the show from Sir Almadel. The winner was ridden by T. King and raced the five furlongs in the good time of 1:01.
