BAUER RETAINS OLD SKILL Gray Ethel in Longest-Priced Victory of Illinois Season Prepared by Veteran Trainer. HOMEWOOD, 111., June 23. The victory, of the long-priced Gray Ethel, which wort the second race here today at odds of 48.60y was a personal triumph for Julius Bauer, veteran trainer. Gray Ethels win was a demonstration of training skill, that indi; cated Bauer has not lost the skill he possessed when he was saddling and sending forth winners of the Metropolitan, Suburban and other historic fixtures in the East in the earlier years of this century. Bauer will not be credited with the training victory however, because he resigned his position as trainer of the K. Mayer Stable, which houses Gray Ethel, three days ago. He was succeeded as trainer by F. Guiher, but Gray Ethel was saddled for her victorious race by C. E. Dale, because the Illinois Racing Commission has not yet sanctioned Guihers training license. Gray Ethel is no world-beater. She failed to win a race in 1936, in fact earning only 5 during last season. Bauer, however, during his term as the Mayer trainer, repeatedly stated that the filly was good enough to win a cheap race. Using all his training skill he brought her up to winning pitch, then resigned his position for personal reasons. Gray Ethel was entered the day after he quit, which was Tuesday, and won today at the longest price paid by any winner at Washington Park and thus far during the entire Illinois season. Bauer has several offers he is considering. Which one he will take is not known at present. His wizardry with Gray Ethel has created a demand for his services.
