DENIES CLEMENCY PLEAS MONTGOMERY, Ala., Nov. 15 Governor Bibb Graves today denied the clemency pleas of five of the defendants in the famed Scottsboro case in which nine negroes were accused of criminally attacking two white girls, on a freight train in North Alabama. The negroes whose pleas were denied were Clarence Norris, under a life sentence; Andy Wright, under a ninety-nine year sentence; Charlie Weems, serving seventy-five years; Haywood Patterson, serving seventy-five . years and Ozie Powell, serving twenty years. Powell never was convicted for the attack case, but instead was given a .twenty year I sentence for stabbing a deputy sheriff dur-I ing one of the numerous trials in connection jwith the case. All but five of the nine ne- groes were freed after the case had dragged through the courts several years.
