! ERNIE NEVERS SIGNED I AS CARDINAL COACH j Big blond Ernie Nevers, All-American fullback at Stamford in 1925, was signed to a one-year contract as coach of the Chicago Cardinals pro football team Thursday by Charles W. Bidwill, owner, who is also president of the Hawthorne race track. Neither Bidwill nor Nevers would disclose the salary agreement. Nevers, in returning to the Chicago Cardinals, is coming back to a position he held in 1929-30 and 31, when he was playing coach of the Windy City aggregation when it was owned by Dr. Ralph W. Jones. His record with the Cardinals for those three years was sixteen victories, three ties and sixteen defeats. Graduating from Stamford in 1926, Nevers went to the St. Louis Browns as a pitcher. That fall, he played with the Duluth Eskimos football team. He returned to Stamford in 1928 as assistant coach, coming to the Cardinals in 1929 and remaining to 1931. He again returned to Stamford in 1932 and stayed there until 1936 when he took the position as coach at Lafayette. From Lafayette he went to Iowa where he assisted Irl Tubbs in 1937 and this year.
