NEW ORGANIZATION TO DEFEND DEMOCRACY WASHINGTON, D. C., Dec. 1 A new organization, reportedly numbering in its membership scores of prominent Americans, created to defend Democracy and protect racial, religious and political minorities, today began formulating a program of action to be directed first at persecutions in Germany. Vice-president Matthew Woll, of the American Federation of Labor, who announced the formation, said the program will be made public within one week. On the lengthy partial membership list disclosed by Woll were William E. Dodd, former ambassador to Germany; William Allen White, editor; President William Green of the A. F. of L.; Grover Whalen, president of the New York 1939 Worlds Fair; Walter Winch ell and Westbrook Pegler, columnists; Edward J. McCormick, grand exalted ruler of the Elks; Cantiago Iglesias, resident commissioner of Puerto Rico at Washington, and Dr. Edward Dewitt Jones, president of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America. The list includes many prominent Labor, Church and professional leaders and university presidents.
