00,000 HANDICAP ATTRACTS 107 NOMINATIONS RECORD ELIGIBLE LIST Every Star in Country Named But War Admiral. Seabiscuit, Stagehand, Porters Mite, Lawrin, Marica, Ligaroti and Flying Scot Entered. ARCADIA, Calif., Dec. 7 The worlds richest horse race the Santa Anita Handicap drew a record list of nominations. When the entries closed December 1, the names of 107 thoroughbreds had been dropped in the mails, addressed to the Los Angeles Turf Club, which annually stages the greatest race meeting on the North American continent. The entries were made public yesterday by Dr. Charles H. Strub, general manager of the big Arcadia racing grounds. With the single exception of War Admiral, all the top ranking horses in training were made eligible to the 00,000 added event, which will be worth upward of 50,000 gross this winter. Seabiscuit, California-owned and the idol of turf fans, heads the list. Then there is Stagehand, winner of the great race last March and generally considered the king of the three-year-old division. Marica, great race mare and recently voted the best of her division for the year; Pasteurized, winner of the Belmont Stakes; Porters Mite, winner of the Belmont Futurity, worlds richest race for juveniles, and other truly great thoroughbreds, have been named for the race, which highlights the winter racing season here. Champions and near-champions of yesteryear are sprinkled throughout the entries, with Brooklyn, Flying Scot, Heelfly and Count Arthur, among others which will attempt the come-back trail. INTERNATIONAL ASPECT. A truly international aspect will be presented in the big race this year, for no less than fourteen imported thoroughbreds have been named. These include Ligaroti, which gave Seabiscuit the hardest race of the champions 1938 campaign, when they raced as a team, eye to eye and nose and nose in a match race at Del Mar last summer. The Binglin horse is believed by many astute California horsemen who have seen him in action to be only a few pounds below Sea-biscuit and the South American has been improving during recent months by leaps and bounds. Kayak II., another Argentine-bred, is in the race, as is OGrady, the star handicap performer which recently arrived from England. Courtil, reputedly a good one from La Belle France, also is in the list, as are several other high-class outlanders. Many horses which rated high up in the handicap division during the present year were named. These include The Chief, Honey Cloud, Cravat, Thanksgiving, Esposa, Flying Lee, Bourbon King, Magic Hour, Routine, War Minstrel and Clodion. WEIGHTS DECEMBER 15. Weights for the 107 nominees will be announced by Webb Everett, racing secretary and official handicapper, on December 15. Heretofore a 130-pound top was in force, but the Santa Anita management announced some time ago that this arbitrary limit had been abandoned. With the weights to be assigned entirely at Everetts discretion, there is much speculation on just what poundage he will assign to Seabiscuit, which Continued on twenty-third page. i 00,000 HANDICAP ATTRACTS j 107 NOMINATIONS Continued from first page. is bound to occupy the honored -position at the top. The 107 nominations for the March 4 running of the mile and one-quarter turf spectacle represents a continued and substantial increase over the number which were named for the race in previous years. For last winters running there were ninety-three nominations; for the 1937 edition eighty-eight were named; eighty-two paid subscriptions to enter for the 1936 event and seventy were made eligible for the great races inauguration in 1935.
