NEW JERSEY REFERENDUM j SET FOR JUNE 20, 1939 j ,1 TRENTON, N. J., Dec. 13. The House of Assembly tonight adopted a resolution setting June 20, 1939, as the date on which the referendum to legalize horse race betting will be submitted to the people. The vote was 36 to 19. Under the bill the state would finance costs of the special election, estimated at between 38,000 and 00,000. Several amendments were added to the bill during the lengthy debate in the House. One set June 6 as the date for registration of voters for the special election. Previously the measure had provided for registration and voting on the same day. Other amendments were designed to clarify the ballot and to permit the use of voting machines. The Senate will vote on the referendum Monday, and political observers are confident it will be passed by the Upper House. This is all that is necessary to send the racing question to the voters in June. The bill makes no mention of dog racing, stating specifically that mutuel wagering must be limited to horses.
